Follow-up: I just finished running McAfee, which took seeral hours. It said I have no infected files, but there's a security alert (a little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark) that says I have a PSW trojan in the tray in the bottom right, and a "protection bar" that I can't get rid of in the toolbars. Any other ideas?

Thsoe popups in the corner of the screen are from something nasty!
Try these programs to fix it in conjunction with the Ad-aware, Spybot and the like already suggested... but the three I'm linking WILL get rid of the corner popups.

I think you are effected by "SMITFROUD". It is a ad-ware. Dont trust them because they will first ask you to download there anti-spyware software after that it will also ask you to regester the product. ofcourse you shoud not register because it will requir your cradit card number. And you know what can happen if you give your cradit card number.........well atleast if you dont want to see your account empty.... I have once have this virus. a web site asked me to download WindowsMediaPlayer codec and it was a virus. I deleted the virus from C:\Program files\Windowa Media Player codec. Deleteing the folder solves every thing. Think how you get the virys. If frim installing a file then remove the files folder. You can download XoftSpySE, it might can help you. I use it and it'll not harm you.

No but if you clicked on the pop up and ran thier so called " scan" it really is unloading lots of malware/spyware/ and ad ware.. with potential virusus... search for the new AVG they have a Free 30 trial ( then goes to basic version) and it has a GREAT scanner!! also tells you what is running on your PC at the time.. if it is slow u can shut some things off AND it has an option to check your start up menu and turn off things you dont need to start when u start your PC .. also makes it run faster!! It used to be on ewido.net.. but AVG just bought them out.

No, your machine is infected with spyware. Get a good antispyware program such as Spybot Search & Destroy or AdAware. Don't buy that crap in the popup messages, it's just more spyware.
You might have picked it up from an e-mail but it's more likely a drive-by download from an infected site.

Don't Click on the Pop-ups. Just Download Adaware & SpyBot S&D, both are good spyware removing softwares. These may help you solve your problem, if there is any spyware in your computer. Also try AVG Antivirus, that you can find on grisoft.com.

You have been infected by a trojan program which is trying to get you to buy bogus anti-spyware software (like you are an idiot.)
Get Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search and destroy. These legitimate anti-spyware app will correct your problem and they are FREE!

Do not click those annoying pop-ups, they are hoaxes and sometimes contain viruses. And there is no way a pop-up can determine that you have a virus on your PC without breaching your security. Why would an anti-virus company do that. Beware, just use common sense.

the pop-ups are the result of malicious spyware on your system. and each time you click on a pop-up it adds more spyware to your system. try using Mozilla Firefox for your browser and download hitman pro. (this is a piece of free anti-spyware software that will remove virtually all spyware and malware from your system.) Firefox is just a better browser than Internet Exploder.

This is a COMMON SCARE TACTIC by anti-spyware companies to make you think you are vulnerable, and, so therefore you buy their product. My suggesstion is to turn on your pop-up blocker to NOT allow popups and get one or more of the free spyware programs like spybot search and destroy, or even yahoo or google toolbars work just as good.
