In order to get ideas for lyrics or poetry,
try opening your mind, and just tell about things that are going on in your life
Trust me,
just go with whatever is in your mind...
it doesn't have to rhyme or anything...
just go with the flow
You will have a good time!
If you start thinking to hard of what you will write, then nothing will come to you.
Buon Divertimento (Have Fun in Italian)!

Just look around and think about some memory
for example-
think about the song unwritten
if u havent heard it look on Yahoo music
sung by natasha bettingfeild
anyways it goes like it
just think about the lyrics and what she did to come up with it
Staring at the blank page before u
open up the dirty window
let the sun come down and make the words that u can not find
reaching for something in the distance
so close u can almost taste it
release ur inabitions
feel the rain on ur skin no one else can feel it for u
only u can let it in no one else
no one else
that is the chorus
write aboutg something u no
dont jsut make words rhyme cuz then it will be horrible!

Three things:
First of all, I keep notebooks and write things down. Sometimes I can go back and read bits and pieces and find that they fill in gaps in a new project. Sometimes I feel like reading my old stuff and reworking parts of it. The end result is nearly always better.
Also, sometimes things just come to me pretty much ready to go. That is usually the case if I have been playing & practicing a lot of music. Then, it is as though practice makes the mechanics of my fingers and my front-brain-mind sort of get out of the way.
Finally, there is a period in the early, early morning when I am half awake & half asleep. Again, the fore-brain is damped down and the subconscious is active. At this time, I can nearly always construct lyrics that I like. The trick is, of course, to recall them when I am fully awake.
It is good to see so many people responding to this question.

It all depends. Some people write about personal events. As you mentioned, some people write about other's events. Lyrics may be political, social, funny or morbid. Personally I feel there is no way to what's going to come out when someone writes a lyric or poem, so just go with it. Write something and come back a day or two later. Change what you don't like.

My mind is a lightening fast spatter of color and light and things and words on a constant never ending loop. I could sit here and write you a poem and have it come out better than decent in about 5 seconds if I wanted to...
It is natural for me. I think and even dream in verse. That is why I write mostly prose. The challenge for me is not in thinking of something to write about but rather in how to write it. I could write about an egg at breakfast and relate it to a thousand other things and have them come out pertinent and meaningful... it is that easy when you have a thought process that is like mine.
I am however, horrible at grammar, spelling and punctuation which is why I have never published in anything really decent. I have a collection on a hidden little obscure website that doesn't really offer too much in lieu of interaction and conversation. Which is exactly how I prefer it. I learned that lesson well! Poets make for strange bedfellows indeed!

I usually take a walk then sit down and write down on a piece of paper how I feel right now and then whatever..Than after it flows when you think of words that associate with that feeling
EX/ Angry
- Why? - Best friend back stabbed me
- When? - This whole week
Ex/ Sometimes a feeling creeps under my skin,
it feels like im being poked with a big fat pin.
How could she do this to me?
How can she not see,
Her unusual actions really hurt me.
Talking, laughing and alot of flirting,
behind my back is what causes my hurting.
She cant just take him away like that,
Whenever I see her my heart falls flat.
I thought she was my very good friend,
but the road of this friendship has come to an end.
I know the poem sucks but its kind of a quick example and I tried to make one really fast so sorry if it sounds bbadd.. But just wondering...is it as bad as I think it is? People can you tell me if its good? Oh and IM me. JUst click on my display picture!
GOOD LUCK

i'll usually sit somewhere quiet and just zone out for a bit and let my feelings come and what i'm feeling i put down into lyrics i dont write poetry much but when i do it's usually "depressing" "strange" or "suicidal" but i can communicate through my feelings very well through writing so my suggestions are just find some place by yourself and write, if you have sudden problems or suddenly you feel happy then write about it even if it isnt to great write down just the feelings you're having if you dont have time so later you can relive how you felt and then write most importantly practice and keep at it it's a skill

I sit there and listen to EMO music (Like Hawthorne Heights) and I usually have my inspiration to write already, I just need something to get me started. The first thing I wrote was called "I Feel." I wrote it cuz my best guy friend had told my Boyfriend that I wanted to break up with him, so It happened. I didn't know anything about this until I got onto myspace and saw that he called me a whole bunch of mean things. but he apologized and stuff and then I wrote that "I Feel" thing. Ever since I started writing, I can't stop. It's a great way to express your feelings.

As to song lyrics,
1. Listen to a song
2. Change the image of the song in your mind
3. Add your own words to the song exactly according to the rhythm and the melody of the song
4. Write them down on your notebook
5. Put totally different melodies and rhythm to the words
6. Then, you have your own song! "Inspired" by a song, but has totally different melodies and rhythm. That is your own creation.
