Good Morning America did a segment recently on legit work-at-home jobs. Some require training such as for medical billing or medical coding. However, you can also apply to become a virtual customer service center. You would be an independent contractor that would answer calls and provide customer service for various companies. You need a computer system and some basic skills and they provide training. I'm doing it myself as it seems like a great way to make extra money and give myself a lot more time freedom. The websites are below:

Hello! I was always looking for a work at home opportunity because I travel with my husband. I have finally found a great one, after searching thru a ton of scams! Anyway, it is FREE to join, which is always good. If anyone asks you to pay to earn money then there is something wrong with that picture! Anyway, check it out. You earn money back when you shop on places online, like eBay (everyone shops online these days) - AND the best part - You earn money when you refer people to shop. Just click the link below and check it out - it really is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It's the Real Deal!
P.S. If you would like, you can email me at my email address under my profile - I will do anything that I can to help you!

Southern Living at Home offers a great opportunity for people to become consultants. I have been doing it for about 4 months and absolutely love it! Everyone provides encouragement, incentives and fun! There is a small start up fee but I made my investment plus profit back in the first month. It is still a small direct sales company that is growing like crazy!!! We are the fastest growing in history. If you want to make money, friends have free vacations and LOVE your job check out this website or email me.

You are going to end up in a pool of sharks by asking this question. There are those out there just waiting for you to ask a question like this so they can spam you with their latest, greatest scheme. Then they can get you signed on, make their $2-$20 off you and move on.
I suppose you have looked in your local newspaper already? You said you do administrative and clerical work. Maybe you need to start thinking out of the box a bit. One job I landed, I got from sending out resumes to companies I wanted to work for, then followed up with a phone call. That was a long time ago now, but it worked at the time.
If you are interested in working online, is it a "JOB" (just over broke) or a business opportunity for you to own your own life? Rarely do we ever make our dreams come true by working a job.
However, working a job can be less demanding than owning our own business.
Yes, I do own my own 'work at home business', but what I do is not near as important as what you want to do and what your goals are.
I would be glad to talk with you more, no, not about my opportunity, but what you need for yourself. If it is an online opp, then I would like to send you some links to some FREE generic sites that will help you weed out the real from the scams, mentoring to help you get going and a site to help train you. No, I am not an affiliate for any of these resources ~ which means I don't make a dime ~ one red cent for helping someone avoid the struggles I had.
Good luck and if I can help, please let me know through yahoo answers or my email at complus1@yahoo.com

You might be able to do work at home via the internet for a book or magazine publishing company proof-reading and correcting documents or something like that. Do you have any special skills such as speaking two languages, so that you could do document translation work or handle foreign correspondance for a company?
Some companies let people work from home via the net providing customer support by email, answering their questions about products and services, visits by repair-men, etc.
Companies 'out-source' some clerical services to out-sourcing companies, such as payroll management and recruitment. If you google for 'outsourcing', you may find out-sourcing firms that need staff.
You might also look into earning money selling things on eBay. Ask on here how to go about it and for legitimate sources of cheap goods to sell. Don't forget to pay tax on it.
eBay lets you sell services as well as goods. You might sell a service on eBay on from your own website or by advertising in your local newspaper or phone book.
You might learn a new skill online that you can offer as a service, such as aromatherapy, acting as a personnel shopper, digitally restoring old photos, etc. Talk to friends for ideas or ask on here.
You might do a low-paid or part-time ordinary job and earn extra money online as well.

There are a couple of websites that have job listings and give good advice about working from home. There are also some low cost and no cost home based business ideas and info on how to get started. They are both free.
http://www.getpaid2workfromhome.com
http://www.coolhomejob.com
try those and see if you find something that works for you.

In something similar to your case, perhaps, a friend of mine has made a quite livable income record-keeping ("paperless" office management, phone answering and some sales and red-tape handling - government forms, licenses, etc.) for some small local businesses. She gradually developed skills up to CPA.

I know that a lot of medical coding jobs allow you to work at home - but you have to take some classes first I think, my cousin loves it b/c of the flexibility.
