I clean her cage every two weeks because that is when I go over to my moms to see her. I always make sure she is feed and has water, I even give her a bath with this spray from the pet store and spray her with flea spray.

I had a hamster as a child named Rosco, just a typical little brown one that lived to be almost 12yrs. And today my son has one that is going on 4yrs. The key I think for them to have a long and healthy life is to keep there cages clean all the time and to love them like you would a cat or a dog.The cleaner you keep there surroundings, the less chance for them to get sick or for parasites to infect them because once they get sick the odds are they will not recover and die shortly after. You can purchase a hamster care booklet at youre local pet store for very little coast. Good luck with youre new found little friend.

Having bred hamsters I can safely say that they live 3 years on average. The hamster you got was probably 2-3 months old...if you got it from a pet store.

Well dwarf hamsters live 1.5-2.5 years. Mine only lasted 4 months and I don't know why. I cleaned its cage every week. I made sure it had clean water and food. It was always active, ran on the wheel, climbed the cage. And then it just died. I found it under the bedding so it must have died in it's sleep which is the best way. I don't know how old the dwarf hamsters at petco are so I have no idea how old my hamster was when it died.
