I haven't done this stuff in over 40 years. From memory the answers that say 36 are correct. I haven't read all the answers and the ones that I have read do state that the parts in brackets have to be done first. However isn't there a prescribed order for the remainder and what is it? If there isn't then you could take the 3 from the 12 (the (4+2)2) before doing the rest and producing a different and, I believe, incorrect result. If you don't get the correct method properly into operation every time then you are as likely to be wrong as right
