I agree with the others. Why don't you put the same question to Yahoo! Search? Or go on HistoryChannel.com? Or wikipedia? It sounds like you need to learn how to research. In that case, you should ask Yahoo! Answers, "how do I find out..." in which case, people will give you lots of sources other than the three above.

To get you started, though, here is a thought: superpowers are attracted by the natural resources of smaller, less powerful countries, and wish to keep the pipeline open to themselves and to keep their enemies from controlling those resources. Hence, the need to establish "outposts" or military bases, or full colonization, to ensure the pipeline is uninterrupted. (Any of this sound familiar to today's world scene?)

So, what are India's natural resources that were so valuable? Tea? Spices? Fabrics (check out how many clothing items are named for Indian areas or cities)? Or, was it just a crucial geographical point? Or was it the need, like the U.S., to establish the Western way of life around the world? A sort of British version of manifest destiny?

Those are the questions. Go. Seek the answers!

Nature is not a real-estate agent. The resources of the world belong to nations with the ability to develop those resources, not to those whose ancestors happen to wander into the territory.

Because of the false theory of eugenics, inheritance is the ultimate evil and the enemy of talent. India, by its anti-human caste system, had forfeited the right to its resources. Class privilege is a crime against human development; the penalty is loss of property rights.

This sounds suspiciously like someone trying to get their homework done for them. ;-)

That said, the answer is simple: power and economics. No explanation needed. Why would anyone colonize anywhere?
