The processor at least is really nice.
Compaq is usually the lower end of HP but it's worth a shot... as long as the other parts are at least decent =)

I don't have much good to say about Compaq but the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 is a good processor for most purposes unless you are a "high end" gamer.
I just researched Dell, Compaq, HP, Acer, Gateway, and a few mongrel brands. I also priced out all the component parts to build a PC myself. Best price was as follows.
My final decision was to buy the Dell XPS 410 without a monitor, modem, or floppy drive. (Not getting these items reduced the price as follows: No monitor = -$180 No modem = -$30. I now use a small USB memory stick as my floppy and it holds 512M.)
Price of the PC was $894.00
PC has:
Windows XP 2005 Media Center Edition
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz (E6400) 2 MB L2 Cache, 1066 FSB
1 GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667 MHz (2 DIMMS)
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE Turbocache video card
250 GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive, 7200 RPM
Intergrated Soundblaster Audigy
Dual CD/DVD Drives = 48X CD R/W DVD and 16X DVD +/- dbl layer write capable
Dell Optical Mouse
Dell USB Internet Keyboard
Fully expandable/upgradeable Case and Motherboard with 8 USB ports (6 rear + 2 front), headphone & microphone jacks on the front panel.
So far I'm very happy with it. I did however, reformat the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP, all the drivers, and all my personal software.
It came with all kinds of pre-installed "crap" as all of the various brands do. I just didn't want to put up with AOL, Microsoft, Symantec, and a bunch of others so I cleaned it up to my satisfaction.
Check it out. It may just be a good option for you also.

To be honest, i'm an AMD fan/person myself. I even have continuously been happy with the reality that the AMD chips have been quicker than their Intel counterpart. So whilst Intel got here out with the middle Duo... i grew to become into stunned that they have got been waiting to triumph over the present AMD lineup. by skill of "present day" I mean what AMD has available in retail maximum appropriate now. So while you're making plans to construct your rig now or in the close to destiny, I hate to admit it yet Intel is tops maximum appropriate now. Me, i'm waiting for what AMD is popping out with as a reaction to Intel's middle Duo. Basing on previous traits, AMD is often waiting to come back up with some thing extra constructive... (I do wish that which will nonetheless be the case this time around). At any fee, if what AMD comes up with isn't rather much as good as Intel's, then i will make the change. So i will wait.

dual core processors are relly great.... and to be honest with you i use one and they work very good....
having a dual core processor is like having 2 processors instead of one.... for example: i have an intel P4 processor, dual core at 3GHz... in the same package i have 2 processors and they work alternately.... if one core becomes unstable, the other core takes a part of the processes that run in the other core...

I agree with Dick.
Go with the dell - out of the brand name machines they are the best bang for the buck. Most people don't even need as much power as their midrange systems provide.
Avoid the celeron processors though, and the low end AMD.
