JUST BE. THAT will define you.

Be yourself. Trying to be someone else won't get you through life. Eventually the real you will catch up with your persona.
For example, you can't make yourself enjoy something to fit in.
People need to learn to accept themselves for who they are. There are things you can change about yourself, though, like being too hot-tempered or not thinking before you speak. Those are things you could work on and improve, whereas an interest in politics, the environment etc. is something you'll likely have forever.
In short, it's much better to just be who you are than to try and be someone you're not. Yes, self-improvement is still a good thing, but that's not quite the same as wearing a mask so you can be like someone else, now, is it?
Anyway, I hope that answers your question.

Through defining yourself, you are being yourself. For some reason the first thing that came to mind when I read your question was the line from Rocky Horror Picture Show: "Don't dream it, be it", and for me that means that I'm defining myself and being myself at the same time, if that makes any sense at all...after all, we are always growing as people(creating ourselves), which means that the two are really the same thing. I accept myself and as I grow and learn new things about who I really am and what I really want, I create the whole person who is me.

You should search deep within yourself and find what it is that you truly want and who it is that you truly are. Then be that person and define yourself as that person, but never let anything else influence you otherwise. Do not try to define yourself as maybe a person who likes picasso only because you feel you should. Instead, either you like him or not. Do not force yourself to be anything that you are not. Always try to keep an open mind as well

Of course, you do both. If you have a consistent sense of self, you may decide at times to present a particular image to the public, or to specific others. This is not to say you are false, but that you acknowledge a difference depending on who you are with, and why.

The most obvious example is the person you are before a policeman who pulls you over while you are driving down the highway is not necessarily the person you are when hanging out with your friends watching a football game on TV. There's no inconsistency or falseness, there's just a sensible adaptation to the circumstances.

I think that everything around you helps define you. You write many chapters in life. As one chapter you may be happy, the next chapter there are circumstances from which you have no control over, such as divorce, death etc, which cause a bit of sadness in your life. I think you must take often inventories of you and who you are. Things change in life and I am definately not the person I was 10 years ago. Each day you obtain some sort of knowledge and it contributes to making your life fuller and contributes to defineing who you are. It is the things around you and your search for knowledge and the way you adapt to things that helps you be yourself. So it would rather be both. Define and be yourself, and they would work hand in hand. Don't you think? If it wasn't how can you "lose" who you are? Many people claim they have lost their identities. I lost who I was during my marriage because of my willfulness and my determination to make the marriage work. It was a one way street and in reality I had no control over him and in that process of trying so desperately, I lost myself. Just recently am I finding myself. So I think it would have to be both, and I think we have to look at ourselves often as life is chapters and we will be an entire different person at the end of the book.

We can't help being ourselves. We live with ourselves 24/7 from birth to death. By defining ourselves, meaning taking on a new image or a new approach to daily life, we are still being ourselves. Ourselves being flexible to the changing environment. For example, a chameleon changes colors depending on its environment. Even though the chameleon changes colors, it's still the same chameleon. That be yourself is very LA philosophy. Here in NYC, we say be rich and successful. If you succeed, you'll define yourself.

Yes, both!
Accepting yourself for what you are and where you are at now will be the first step in defining who you want to become.

Generally, we agree with the statement "be yourself." It is assuring that being yourself is better than to mimic other people.

When we say define yourself, we mean: provide your characteristic highlights, what kind of parent, child, friend,...are you, what are your hobbies, etc.

We constantly change and re-define ourselves. We are always ourselves even though we mimic other people sometimes. We are a combination of traits and have power to change and adopt, but are individually unique.

Taking into consideration the factor of change, and since there's always room for improvement, the phrase could change to: "re-define yourself"

I believe the first answer to be correct. We are all products of our environment, for better of for worse, thus, be what you know to be at your most natural state, and that shall define you to others. Who you are in reality, is whoever you choose yourself to be. You'll know who that is, because it'll feel most right to you, Emotionally speaking. All in all, everything we are is a product of what we've thought. so if you decide you're something different than others see you as now, it'll still be who you are, because you say so. You constitute you. What you are now is a product of your past thoughts and actions. So if you say you're something different now, you soon will be after your follow through. You decide it all. You'll see what I mean through experience. This life is all perspective, and no one will stand in judgement of it, now or ever. Always remember that.
