In my opinion you need 100 cfm for each foot of cook-top..In other words a 30" range would require at least 250 cfm to do any real good..I have a 36" six burner range. I installed a 600 cfm that is variable speed. Works great. The customary home owners range hood at best is about 100 cfm. Absolutely worthless. Make noise and doesn't do a hell of alot. If you get something smaller it will not do what you want. By the way I am talking outside venting. Nothing that recirculates is not worth the screws to put it up........

Almost any kitchen needs an exhaust hood. It pulls smoke and moisture from the air. If you have musty smells there is a new product out there simular to Febreeze, but just for the air..
I found some interesting info on odors in the house from this website

No fan/exhaust system will get rid of the cooking smell. Get a air freshener like Oust that actually gets rid of the source of hte odors without just covering them up with perfumes. Until it starts getting cold outside I leave a window open in my kitchen and others around the house to get fresh air in.

What is nice about exhaust hoods, they do pull the air out. So they do help especially if you burn something and need to get the smoke out. They also work if you are boiling something that you constantly have to stir, it pulls the steam out so it isnt in your face the whole time

You can put the fan, yes it will work. The way to really get a smell out of the house, spray water mixed with white vinegar all around the house. You can mop with it and spray on the carpet(litely)---then put a fan on until the vinegar dries. The smell will go away.I took shrimp smell out of my car with this method.Really works......

Do you have a microwave? Try adding some cinnamon to water and mic it on medium until the smell penetrates throughout the space.
