The stereotypes all depict Midwesterners as bible-thumping
farmers. At the same time,New Yorkers aren't portrayed well
either so your cousin can't talk. Unfortunately many people allow
their view of the world to be dictated by the media,which often
takes the narrow view of things.

I am from chicago and the rest of the midwest is a bunch of bible thumping rednecks - not to say there are not nice rednecks but pllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssseeeeeeeee everyone knows below I-80 sucks! and is all corn!

Hard workers, very nice, hospitable. Great people in general.
But people from movies like "Boy's don't cry" hurt the general population a little.

it's a gross generalization, but by and large they consider midwesterners to be hardworking, virtuous, but a bit more philistine -- less liberal and enlightened than the coastal, more multicutural/cosmopolitan types. midwesterners are also perceived as being more religious and conservative, which is probably accurate.
