Perhaps, if he had purchased the land through a synonym name / corporation, he may have been able to get a better deal. You see, a problem can occur when there is publicity of WHO is purchasing a property, and the seller gets wind of it, thereby hiking the price up or maintaining his/her asking price, which may be way above market.
Back in the 1960's Walt Disney was able to purchase land for a fair market price in Florida for his future plans of the Disneyworld park. If he had announced his interest in the land, then the speculators would have jumped in and tried to gain a greater profit. By Disney being very quiet, and gathering land softly, he was able to get a better price AND did not cause the land prices to escalate, inflation to occur for other individuals who were privately purchasing land at the same time, thereby, making land more affordable to a greater number of persons.
Sometimes quiet purchasing is smarter. I think that Mr. OBama could have worked a much better deal if the negotiations were done without publicity.

Hmmm...let's see.....
You are looking to buy a car, let's say it's a crasher and it's asking price is $2000.
You're not looking to spend any extra cash and would love to save whatever you can, so you ask the guy selling it if he wouldn't mind claiming he sold it for only $300 on the bill of sale so you can save on the taxes.
Hmmm.......
Now simply consider we're talking about a multi-million dollar purchase...a few hundred thousand would pretty well equal a decent offering price wouldn't you say? Or do you normally pay full price on items like that?
Do you walk onto a car lot and demand to pay full sticker price for the car you want?
Yeah, didn't think so.
Maybe we should have a friend of yours follow you around when you make these types of purchases and report them here so we can all point the finger at you like you are attempting to do to Obama.

He made an offer and they accepted it. When a property asking price is 1.8 million an offer less 300K isn't out of line. They could have rejected it and they didn't. But, he's made his first real mistake and now has to learn that everything he does, EVERYTHING, will be up for public examination. Does this reflect his inexperience in political matters? Absolutely. Let's see if he learns from it.

Man!, that's NOTHING!!!
Here in Austin Texas, the Lib City Council managed to reward some Buddies with a land purchase for 5 times the property value and are proud of it!
I truly despise them and the Sanctuary city they have created!

It's common with higher end property for the seller to price it 20 to 30% higher than what they expect to get for it. This leaves room for negotiations between buyer and seller.
I agree totally with Turboweegie.
If you want to criticize Obama for something, look on his website and at a book review or amazon summary of his book. What are his ideas about government, etc? Ask about those! This how we can get good people in office, instead of teflon clowns with money and connections.

Because they must have been a motivated seller, and the amount offered good enough to accept.
Unless you're talking hot real estate markets (like Marcos Island, FL) you generally do not offer the asking price in a real estate deal.
Now, I'm no fan of Democrats of Barack Obama, but I've seen nothing to indicate he is not an honest and decent person (unlike the Clintons).
I dispise this type of mud-throwing - it is for small-minded children, not adults.

Sounds like a good investment to me. Maybe you prefer to pay over the asking price on your investments?
You wouldn't be alone. I'm a Washington Redskins fan and every year I suffer through Dan Snyder doing the same.

Well, I guess good for him. He probably took food out of the mouth of the republican wealthies by figuring out how to unethically buy something that far below the market value.
