You can buy a GM crate motor for 3 large or so. That's your best bet. Install a new radiator along with it. Tranny may be shot as well.

Depends entirely on the mechanic/shop that does the work AND if there's any changes you're making in the set up. If it's the same motor, it's much eaier and cheaper.

If you're switching from a six to a V-8, it's going to be a lot more. I'd estimate the time required to be around 12-16 hours at whatever the labor rate is. (35-75 per hour)

hard parts may include, hoses, belts, motor mounts, exhaust gaskets, broken studs, fluids and misc items to be around $100.

Then again, you could a Joe Blow shade tree guy to do it for $200. minimum.

That depends on the kind of engine you buy. You can get a 305 or 350 from a salvage yard that is reasonable. It all depends on where you live. Make sure the tranny is good too, they have the short shaft tranny. Also check underneath, make sure the frame is not all rusted out. The fuel lines and brake lines should be checked too. It seemed liked El Caminos had a tendendency to be built from metals that rusted easily. Also the joints that used balls, like the tie rod ends seemed to go bad.

i bought an el camino off of ebay too. i payed $1,700, it had a new paint job, newer 350 in it, TH350 trans, and a solid frame. i'd imagine you'd spend around $1,000 total to get the engine in your car and the way you want it. there always seems to be little nickle and dime things that keep popping up when working with older cars like that.

the labor should only cost around 300 at the most,,and that's everything included ,,you probably can get it done a lot cheaper,i do them at my shop for around 200 and all the other shops around me don't like it when i under cut there prices,,but its not a hard job on a Chevy,,for me its a one days job to get it in and running, and out the door, but id expect to pay at least 300,,good luck i hope you get it going.
