Hi every1 & Happy New Yr 2 u all! I've just started to recycle, but I'm unsure of a few things, in our area they collect different coloured bags of plastic bottles/aluminium tins/cards& mags. But they don't allow things like plastic food wrappers, so where would I put this sort of plastic? And anything else that they don't allow, do just throw it away with the normal junk, but it's plastic too? It's all so confusing! x

Plastic food wrappers and cardboard boxes that have held food (like pizza boxes) cannot be recycled because of the food and grease that is stuck to them. If you look at plastics, they'll have a recycling arrow around a number that tells you if it can be recycled. If you wash out plastic milk jugs and food cans (like soup and vegetable ones), they can be recycled. Still confused? Call your local recycling company and they can send you a brochure stating what can be recycled and what can not. Thanks for caring about Mother Earth!

When you recycle you use things to make other things. You don't really use it over again. In a way you do though. You should just put the plastic things with the trash, but when they pick it up separate it. The other things not sure. Just think about what it is more like, plastic, trash, paper, etc. It is very good to recycle. Keep it up.

Alex is right: Food wraps really aren't considerred 'collectable'. But...

I use plastic grocery bags as garbage can liners. And sometimes as packing material, if they're not soiled. Aluminum cans can be rinsed out and recycled, and the same with plastic and glass bottles. I save empty speghetti sauce jars so my husband can use them to take soup to work, or to hold other things. And empty plastic kitty-litter jugs can be rinsed out well and used to hold emergency water in case of another hurricane for instance.

Happy New Year! Yes you do bin it with all the normal junk - In my area they have different coloured bins for recycling - Food wrappers/carrier bags/cling film etc, tend to clog up the machines used for recycling, so they ask for them to be binned with normal junk - You should be able to get a leaflet from your local council telling you what sort of rubbish can go in each bin / bag. Happy recycling!

I used to work for a small recycling center in colorado. Your best bet would be to contact them and ask for a list of what they accept.

We had one of these for folks just starting out.

no 1 excepts food wrap because its not worth there time to wash and melt down something of such little value.
