Your system should give you a restart safe option, if not, use the start up disk that came with the computer and reboot everything. all your info will still be there, it will just take a little time to get it.

after that, run a virus scan, an ad aware scan, and a disk clean up. then run a disk defragmentor

Go into safe boot by pushing F8 or tapping F5. Go to "find" and type in win/32. Then look for the one associated with "slash." Now you have to make a choice. If you delete this it will be attached to a part of windows that IS needed. Part or all of windows will cease to work correctly. But you are wanting to take this chance. That way you can at least go back into windows and get what you can salvage from your files. Then you will need to put in your OS CD and pick the option to not fix but reinstall.

But don't listen to me...after years of being dissapointed in PC's I have gone with a MAC.

Well one option is to reformat it... which would delete everything you had on the computer so might not be a great idea... save for last resort.

Another option would be to open up in safe mode and try to repair the corrupted file. You can get into safe mode by starting the computer up and tapping f5

other than a VERY long process in recovery console restoring system restore files manually, you can try these 2 things:

Get your windows XP CD. Boot into it and load Recovery console.

Once you get to a C:\> you can type chkdsk /r and once that finishes, type exit and press enter.

If that doesn't work, try a repair install of windows. You will need to reinstall some programs but you'll save most of your data.

Boot to safe mode and put you Windows disk into Rom Drive. Go to Start - Run and type SFC. This should fix your problem.
