Ask the people who are attending to bring any phonograph records that they have from the 50's-60's - also any photos they may have from those two decades, if the birthday person is in the photos all the better - but if not, you still get a feel for the era.
You might also ask them to write up one thing they remember from back then that can be read at the party.
Wear poodle skirts, etc Rent "Grease" to get a "feel" for the time - and go from there.
And, if you have any older cookbooks, you could use them for ideas for snacks.
I agree with those who have already said NO to "over the hill" and "r.i.p." Tacky.
Another thought would be to have the guests dress like their favorite 50's - 60's stars. They could try to guess who each other is. And, you could run DVD's of "Happy Days"
You can probable tell - I like the "go with the era" theme.
It's OK to have guests to bring an appetizer or something to eat, especially if they don't have to bring gifts. That way, what they bring - records, dishes, etc is their gift.
Good luck, and have a great time! Don't stress about it being perfect or the like - the idea is that friends and family are getting together and having fun!!

When I hit 50 I was surrounded with family and friends. There were some of those spoof gifts too and they were a riot. Have plenty of both. A favorite present would be a nice addition too but you need to judge that. The party is pretty nice in itself. Unless people all chip in together and get her a day at a spa or a massage. $350.00 will get you pretty far depending on number of people and if you don't cater the food too much. Have it at home to save and make it feel more personal. But be sure not to go too heavy on the "50" issue as a joke too. It can get to be a bit much.
Make nice appetizers and fancy desserts. Play her favorite music.
She will be very grateful I'm sure.

Please don't buy black tombstones with large RIP on it.

To help with the budget, ask people to bring one item of food. Society has gone casual enough that people are okay doing this.

1. Have everyone dress as they were 50 years ago unless that would mean most people would be embryos.
2. Have some party trivia games based on the person's life.

If it's someone you really like SKIP on the over the hill stuff. Alot of it is MEAN! Telling you you're not going to see, hear, or be able to think because you're "old". This isn't Pakistan. Men live to be 50 just fine!
Do something that makes them feel like a kid again; a miniature golf course, Dave and Busters, or Chuck E Cheese. No kidding!

go retro! all the things they loved when they were growing up or at least things that were poppular in that time. old movies, slogans, fashions,etc... get creative with posters, pins, etc... decorate the cake accordingly. you can make it a lot of fun and $350 is definately enough to get it done. good luck!
