I do know that they did something similar to my niece when she was born because she kept spitting up mucus. So they put a thin tube into her stomach and suctioned it out. It was done in the hospital while she was still there.

If this is a feeding problem and the baby is a week old or older, I doubt that it is amniotic fluid causing the problem and their could be an underlying issue, but if the baby is still in the hospital then it makes sense. Otherwise the amniotic fluid would be either digested or thrown up within a few days of birth. If the baby is older I would get a second opinion. If the baby is just a few days old then let them do the procedure and see if it helps.

Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? Certain types of Formula won't agree with all babies, so that could also be an issue.

Your doctor may have said they were flushing out meconium. Meconium is the first bowel movements a newborn has. Most begin the meconium bowel movements after birth, but sometimes they begin during birth and the baby may aspirate that. This does pose a possible serious complication requiring additional medical attention. Babies in utero swallow amniotic fluid throughout the pregnancy and the debris is what makes the meconium. Here is a good website explaining it http://www.drgreene.org/body.cfm?id=21&action=detail&ref=31

Some babies don't eat for the first 24 hours due to amniotic fluid (and other delivery fluids, mucus, etc.). After that first 24 hours we really worked hard to get them to eat. Ask your doctor about deleeing the baby. A small tube that will remove any axcess fluid or gas from her belly.
How old is this baby?

im sure its because of all the nice smelling products, but i understand they smell good before products to! im guessing its like that ditingushied smell that your having with your sibling with there fresh cells and that? im not entirely sure though. I kinda put this to cows lol, when a cow gives birth it smells the calf a lot and starts licking off the after birth to clean it off. It also eats its sac(like the placenta) when that comes out the mother of the baby or anyother cow will eat it because they like the smell and it has a ton of nutrients in it for them!

The baby gets its food through the umbilical cord.

You really need to ask the doc!
