That advice would be entirely incorrect.

The time during your cycle where you would be most fertile are days 12-17 from the first day of your period. Your best bet would be to avoid unprotected sex from day 10 to day 20 (assuming that your cylce is 28 days).

The SMARTER route is to use a condom every time. Not only does it help protect you pregnancy, but from sexually transmitted diseases (STD's).

That method of birth control called natural family planning --- because it's intended for planning a family. It is best for married couples who are ready to have a child but don't currently wish to get pregnant. It doesn't guarantee that you won't get pregnant, you can actually (in somewhat rare cases) even get pregnant while you're on your period. It just depends on how long the sperm cells survive inside you. If they stay alive until you're in a fertile period, they could get you pregnant. I would STRONGLY recommend you use condoms or pills or a combination of both if you're not married or in a long term (been together at least 5 years) relationship, and ESPECIALLY if you're under 18. However, if you insist upon using that method, you can find information about a device that can help you keep track of your menstrual and ovulation cycle, so that you will be able to tell which days you are likely not to get pregnant.

Edit: If you've already had unprotected sex and you're worried you might be pregnant, look into a morning after pill. See the second link below.

The best way not to get pregnant? Don't have sex on any day that ends in Y.

Even the most maticulous person with counting days will find that using that method will result in a pregnancy at some point.

Use some form of birth control (condoms are the cheapest and the easiest to get). That will be the best way to remain not pregnant and still have sex. No sex is the best way to keep from getting pregnant.

If you were on the pill before and just missed taking one you should be OK but it is best to refer the the leaflet that came with them and if you are still in any doubt regarding that you should contact your doctor/family planning clinic for further information.

As a form of contraception its not advisable and who ever has told you it is OK to have sex after your period is wrong as it is possible to get pregnant at anytime during your cycle.

If you have any doubts you are pregnant just do a test at the correct time indicated on the box and check

Well if you use condoms and get on some birth control you may not get pregnant as easily. Go to your doc or a local health dept. Anytime you have sex without a condom you are never fully safe no matter if it is before or after your period. Be smart.

don't be stupid. try using an actual method of birth control like condoms or the pill. the calendar method isn't effective.
