I have fallen several times on the area just below the left knee cap and have had stitches as well. I have pressure pain on the area and swelling and had an xray which showed nothing, was then referred to a Ortho. Surgeon who determined that the pain is from a build up of Scar Tissue and referred me to a physical therapist to break-up and desensitize the scar tissue. I've had 3 weeks of p.t. with no signs of improvement. By using an ultrasound on teh area, finger massaging, and ice therapy, ad exercies. The physcial therapist is baffled. I'm going back to the ortho. surgeon Monday. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any recommendations?

I'd say this is a bogus diagnosis. If it is truely scar tissue, it should only hurt when put on tension and be relatively pain free at rest and mid range motion. Repeated trauma to the knee needs to be evaluated for soft tissue derrangement by completing an MRI. A bone scan may be in order as well. Although I do agree with the surgeon by sending you to PT first...there's nothing the PT did that should have hurt you. It's now time for most tests. If the PT was going to help, you'd have at least a little improvement by now.

The swelling you mention indicates you have a torn muscle(s) or tendon(s). The tears may be minute, but each time you feel pain you are re-injurying the area. Treat it as a sprain or strain with R.I.C.E.

REST-Stop all activities which cause pain to the sprained area.

ICE-Apply icing to the area several times a day, but never for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Protect the skin.

COMPRESSION-Wrap the sprained area to reduce swelling.

ELEVATION: Keep the sprained area as close to the level of the heart as is conveniently possible.

The Ice and Compression (Cold compression therapy} will stop the pain and swelling while the injury starts to heal itself. Controlling the swelling and inflammation is critical to the healing process and the icing further restricts fluid leaking into the injured area as well as controlling pain.

I think if you use ice and compression to stop the swelling, and are faithful in not re-injuring the area, it will heal on it's own.

Still go see your doctor if scar tissue is a problem.

Good Luck

Scars act as capacitors. They store electrical energy and then discharge it randomly. This can creates havoc with your autonomic nervous system. Potentially leading to other problems. There are really three effective ways to treat the scar. Wheat germ oil, cold laser therapy or get it injected, a procedure called neural therapy. All three will soften up and break up the adhesions as well as deactivate the scar. A combo of wheat germ and cold laser is less invasive and usually as effective. You may be able to find a chiropractor in your area using cold laser.

You need to build strength in that knee. Get a set of weights
and put them on your ankles and work out every other day.
Get a magnet off your refrigerator and wrap it around the knee where u hurt.
Ginko Boloba is good for knee and foot pains also.
