if you go to that location in western Darfur, it looks like a black swamp - there are a few of them in that region. I once read that the entire area is so mineral rich (includeing Crude) that anyone that controls that region, controls much of africa...... any thoughts on what it is?

Very interesting! Could be a lake, but I haven't seen a lake that dark in color before. Nice find!

I don't have Google Earth, but Google Maps works too. It looks to me like just a small lake; you can see how a stream flows into it from the northwest and has cleared a smooth patch near where it flows out; the other not smooth part may be covered in water plants. The southeastern edge looks quite straight, but it's hard to tell if it's artificial or not. On the whole, I'd say just a lake.

It looks to me like a lake rich in minerals (due to its dark coloring). If you look slightly southeast of that location, you can see what looks like a processing area for fertilizers. And just slightly north that processing area is an area that looks like a farming area. Very Interesting!
