This is not about lying, but I'm in a debate with a friend and we're just trying to get this cleared up. Honestly, does anyone know if an employer can really find out if a person holds a certification or not?

A good employer would. If it is from a well-known institution, like a Microsoft Certification or something like that, it is definitely verifiable. If it is from an unknown source, a good HR manager would check it out.

I think the more important question here is, would an employer actually take the time to investigate whether or not you have the certification that you say you do and that answer is probably dependent on the type of job you are seeking.

For example, if you are applying for a teacher position, your teacher's certification will most certainly be checked.

However, if you are applying for an IT position in a lawfirm and claim to be Microsoft certified, they may or may not check whether you actually received your certification.

I think it all really depends on the type of certification and the type of position you are seeking.

Yes they can, but it is not always fast and easy to verify certifications.

What kind of certifications are you referring to anyways?

If I have a QA/QC certification in Concrete (civil engineering applications), I would be listed as having a certification with the authoritive agency, which would be the American Concrete Institute. And if I lied about it, I would not be in their database as having a certification.

Yes, most certifications are held through universities and colleges. They can be checked. If the certification holds any real importance, it is checkable. That's just the way it works.

if you have held any jobs, u have something called a personnal file, everything about you goes into it at each job, ,job performances, promotions, how many times you were caught picking your nose, the original job application, which often asks about any type of certification.Sometimes the type of job you are at you will have because of being certified. There are also registeries to find out about certain certifications.I am a certified nurses aide, my employer, or future employer can call the nursing registery to find out if I am registered as I say I am.If you are trying to be dishonest about something, it will catch up with you in the long run.Why lie be proud of the accomplishments you have made, and continue with more. :) :)

If your Certification was recorded and on your record then yes....otherwise no. Unless they speak with the place that you got the Certification.

I don't think they have access to that information unless granted permission. They are capable of checking your criminal records though.

Yes. It is certainly possible. Otherwise, what would be the point?
