The draft was done away with during the Vietnam era, around 1974, so there has been a significant gap of time where the general US populace has enjoyed a free ride so to speak without the expectations or even fears of being drafted entering into the mindset of the average young male person as it once did.

Of course, during those times there has always been the crafty and sneaky types, in fairness both Neocons and so-called Libs, who evaded the draft or Active Duty, like current stuffshirt VP Dick Cheney for instance with his multiple deferrments, and those that "stayed the course" in the US National Guard in cushy Parental arranged Stateside duty, as our beloved leader enjoyed, and who apparently made such a impression on his Drilling Unit that virtually no one remembers his presence at the mandatory drills.

Ever notice, that the most vocal opponets of reinstating the draft IN ANY FORM to include mandatory Nation Service are the usual Neocon talking heads and NOT a majority of so-called Libs? In fairness, not ALL Neocons or Conservative types are against a draft or National Service, but a rather high and disturbing amount of them are!
Amazing, and a quick snapshot into the very moral decay that has led to this current state of affairs, of utter selfishness and self centeredness that widely prevails in US culture. During WWII, Americans on the Homefront, both poor and well off, were much more willing to sacrifice comforts and goods to further the war effort.

Today, during a time of war, we have been saddled in the USA with so-called leaders who apparently only want to further the consumption of goods and services for the obvious financial gains of their feverent supporters, of having a pork spending orgy while they occupy the Executive Office and who are guilty of obvious and frequent political baiting and divisive domestic policies.
A President and VP, both by example and words over the course of their lives, have NOT set very good moral examples for others to be inspired by or follow. Is it any wonder why a sense of utter apathy, total lack of empathy, and plenty of self centeredness and laziness fill the moral landscape of the USA today? In a enviroment like that, how would a draft survive, much less ever be reinstated?

News flash, there won't be a draft. Look it up, the military has met it's recruiting requirements this year and the previous years in all fields. It's not gonna happen so get over it.

I am 38, and if asked to serve I would do so proudly. But there will not be a draft.

no parent wants their kid to meet an early dead, rich or poor. if there was a draft, i would probably go even though my family would be deadset against it.

Send old wealthy guys to fight. Why sacrifice our kids.

Nope, screw 'em. I'd be in Canada.
It'd be one thing if it was a war worth fighting. But every war since WWII was uneccesary.
I'm not dying for no good reason.
