This is an older system which will most likely have ATA-100 cabling and controller.... So you can look at either ATA-133 or ATA 100 drives...

Due to the date of the computer, I would be scared to go over 80 GB hard drive... It may support 100 or 120 GB hard drive. A 160 GB drive will put you back around $39 US on special....

I would go retail on the hard drive to give you a better warranty... Check out weekly special from Best Buy, Staples, Circuit City or others...

Drives are dirt cheap these days, especially basic IDE hard drives like the one you have in your old Compaq.

Expect to pay around 50¢ to 60¢ per gigabyte. I'd look on http://www.pricewatch.com or http://www.newegg.com for some good prices. Because you have an older PC, be careful not to buy one that has too much space, because your system might not be able to see it all. I'd go with an 80GB drive which should be plenty. If you need more, buy a new PC.

Depends on the size of the drive. Between 50-100 bucks go to pricewatch.com and look for an ide hard drive you should be able to find 1 for cheap price.

By the time you buy a hard drive for your old machine, you could be halfway to paying for a new dell.

Especially if you end up with the wrong drive.

What version of Windows are you running?

If you are running Win 98SE or higher take a look at this page.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010150014+1035907789&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=14

It is a page of ATA drives which I would assume would work fine with your machine without knowing anything about it
