Could be that the pilot flame is not impinging on the thermocouple. This is the long round thing about 1/8th inch in diameter.

Also it could be a problem wth the thermocouple. If you are handy, you can replace it. Some hardware stores have them.

Sounds like you need to replace the burner. Sometimes the pilot light won't stay lit, even though you just lit it and and stays on for a moment - so then you need to replace the pilot light (it's like a long copper cord with the pilot attached to the end).....it's only about $3 at Lowe's.
