Your system may not be able to handle this size of hard drive.... I noticed on the system specs that it is using PATA v4 or ATA 100.... So if you purchased an ATA 133 or ATA 100 it will be able to connect and replace the existing hard drive....
The BIOS last revision dates to 2002.... Could not find out what storage capacity it could handle.... So my guess is max of 160 GB... So most hard drives come with a floppy which has a cool application to partition, format, and manage the hard drive... I would see if 1) the bios sees the drive at all..., then 2) partition the drive into say 120GB partitions... This may help....
It is always good to see what your system can handle before buying the hardware..
Now another option no one discussed it that you install the old hard drive and run the OS from the old hard drive and get an external USB hard drive case and USB connect the new drive to the PC.... Move all your data files to this USB external hard drive....
Good luck...

Is this a brand new hard drive? If so uninstall the driver and then re-install it. Can you see the device in device manager? If you can see it, try reinstalling the driver. If you can't it might have somehow got unseated from the cable. Depending on how techie you are, open it up (the laptop) and re-seat it. If nothing works...call tech support.

If the Bios is updated then Windows has a HOTFIX for this. It relates to the LBA Large block addressing for the Drives.

Boot to your XP disc, run recovery console and do a chkdsk /r, if that doesnt work try a fixboot or fixmbr.. Try safe mode if all else fails, check event log, etc..
John, that is when your BIOS only reckognizes a smaller portion of your HDD and not all of it.... This guys HDD wont boot at all, there is no hotfix for that..

it could have been a doorstop earlier your formatted. The disk replaced into unable to format, so something would have been incorrect with it already. It additionally would have been an blunders on your OS. if that's the case there could be a gamble to get it back to working concern. examine on your device supervisor to make certain whether it truly is listed. From there you have greater thoughts to poke a temperamental device
