I was in the same boat as you with my son. What happened with me was, I went to the hospital at midnight. After checking in, and getting blood work, and a fluid IV, they put this little pill in my cervix called Cervidil. I REFUSED THE PITOCIN! Remember you can ALWAYS refuse. This is used to make you dialate. When I went to the hospital, I was dialated to a 3 ( but I had been for about 2 months ) After about 5 hours, a second Cervidil was placed. A while after that, they put a hook inside of me to break my water. That's when things started happening. Contractions really started coming then. Once I was dialated to a 7, I received an epidural. Now, this was 3 1/2 years ago, so I can't remember how long after I got the epidural that I started pushing. What I DO know, is that I was in labor for 26 hours. End result, a beautiful, healthy baby boy! Remember that EVERY woman's experience is different. With this being your first child, and getting induced on top of that, you should expect a lengthy labor. But, it will go by before you know it, and all be a blur to you as soon as your baby is placed in your arms. Good Luck and Congratulations!

First you are seduced and nine months later you induced.
There many things the Doctor has to evaluate for your situation at the time. If, the "Cervix" has not began to get soft and dilate then they say your "Unripe". So, they may need to give you some certain Hormones to help this along before actually inducing labor. Many women may follow a Average as to how things go. But, as you can see there other things that must be considered before just giving you an IV and/or a shot. But, this is basically what to expect. Just relax and know that they know what to do and will do this in the best way to protect you and the baby and help everything go smoothly. Just keep thinking in a few hours you be holding that little baby burrito. I call them Burritos because that about what they look like after the Nurse wrap them up. And, no matter how hard you try, you probably never be able to do that Burrito Wrap once you remove the blanket.
I not sure I should say this as I not want you to worry or be scared, but, another thing you may expect, and I say this so you know and not be surprised. IF, the induction not work, you will need to have a C-Section. Please do not let this worry you. But, it can happen. OK? Just tell them you want a "Bikini Cut", if they ask. I feel everything will go well and the Baby come out the normal direction.

I was induced, and was given pitocin to induce labor. I went to the hospital at 6am, and my daughter was born at 1pm the same day.

This was my first and only child, and I too was scared and did not know what to expect. But, it went much better than I would have ever imagined.

For the first few hours, I did not feel much. But, by 11am, I was in quite a bit of pain, an opted for an epidural.

I was told by the nurse that when you are induced, that it is much different than going in to labor naturally. Because, the nurse is basically controlling your contractions, etc. by the amount of pitocin that is being pumped in to your body. I was also told that most people who have labor induced, do tend to get an epidural, as the pain tends to be a little more constant and extreme than a natural delivery. But, that is what the epidural is for!

Anyway, I'm sure you will do fine. I did fine, and I was so scared about getting induced that I could not hardly sleep the night before. Now, looking back, I kind of laugh at myself for getting so worked up over it.

I was induced with my son. You can expect what any other labor would in tale, only chances are it will just take longer. Since they are putting drugs into your system to make the baby come rather that naturally going into labor, sometimes it can take the body a little longer to catch on. With me... I was put in the hospital at about 8pm to be induced but not a lot happened, just some weak contractions until the next morning at about 7am when they broke my water. After that it was real labor. I delivered my son at 3:07pm. But I also had to push for well over an hour. But don't get to worked up. Everyone is different so there is no way to say for sure how you will do. But when its over it is all very worth it.
I am having my 3rd child on Fri. via c-section. Good luck to you and your little one.

I have been induced twice. First they inserted a gel around my cervix to soften it and see if that would open it up. When that did not work, the gave me Petocin.

It did not work immediately, but when it started, there was no gradual build to the contractions, they just started up 2 minutes apart and 45 seconds long. With my second child, they did give me an epidural when I dailated to 3, so that helped a lot.

With my daughter, they had to get the Petocin up very high to start labor, but once it started, she was out in 1hr and 12mins.

My son was better because of the epi, I was in labor with him for about 5 hours only.

The nurses and doctor took good care of me and tried to make sure that I was a comfortable as possible. They said that the more relaxed I could be the better it was for my child. I am sure they will take good care of you.

I was induced when I was 38 weeks. I went in at 5pm. They inserted what they call gel packs into my cervix to thin it out. I think they did this 2X's. I went to sleep that night (if they offer to give you something to help you sleep take it!) and the next morning around 6am they broke my water. Then they started the Pitocin this induces your labor. The only thing was it made my contractions all over the place. With natural labor you have a slow progression in your contractions. I lasted about 3 hours then I got the Epideral. It was so worth it. I was comfortable and relaxed and it made the rest of the labor and delivery quite enjoyable! My daughter was born at 3pm that day. So the whole process was about 22 hours. After the only problem I had was with nursing. My milk never fully came in. I read after that this can happen to women who are induced. I was able to nurse for about 2 weeks, but had to suplement with formula. Good Luck!

They'll start by putting you on Potocin, which is just plain nasty stuff. It makes you go into hard labor and fast. Then they'll break your water, and the fun begins. Lots of women these days say they want a natural child birth, but as soon as the contractions start, it's Epidural time. No shame in it. It's your friend. It's actually been shown to shorten labor in some cases. Once they break your water, the clock starts ticking, because they have to have the baby out in 8 hours or risk complications, so depending on how you react to the Potocin, you could still need a C section. As long as you're showing progress, the doctor won't go that way until you get to the 7th hour, though.

I was induced the day after my due date(a wednesday). When I went in there they got me in the gown and hooked up an IV. Then started to give me petocin(spellin of that word might be wrong) to bring on my contractions hoping that will help open my cervix and put me into serious labor. Well, my cervix didn't open. They had to stop that. Wait an hour...then give me a tablet that is put in through the vagina to open my cervix. They gave me two of those that can only be given once every four hours. So....almost 10 hours later they started the petocin again. After 41 hours of trying to get me into labor....i had a c-section. I had the contractions. I actually was having my own contractions without the medicine. And all I have to say is that you shoudl expect is that the medicine brings them on fast.....But the nurses and such can slow it down so it isnt too fast and too much for you....If your body takes to the inducement you might have that baby in just a couple hours. My sister had her child within 6 hours of being induced. So, it really depends on your pain tolerance and your body. Your gonna want to start thinking of pain meds and an epideral.

Well a lot will depend on what medication your doctor uses to induce you. Mostly they give you an IV and add the medications to it. Then after a couple hours you will start to have contractions. Sometimes the contractions are very hard even at first because of the medications dont hesitate to ask for some pain relief if you need it. And Good Luck and Congrats on your new little one.

I was induced at 40 weeks with my daughter. (She is now a year old). I went to the hospital. They checked me in. I was put in a wheelchair and taken upstairs. I was pushed into a laor and delivery room. The nurse gave me a hospital gown to change into. After I changed, she took my vital signs. Then, I waited for the doctor to come in. He examined me (pelvic exam). Then he ordered an ultrasound. The tech came in while he was still the
room and they did it together. Then, the nurse came in and they started an IV with Pitocin in it.
After an hour, I started having very painful contractions. (They
couldn't give me an epidural right away because you have to dialate so far before they can.)
After 6 hours, I still hadn't dialated enough. So, the doctor returned
and broke my water. (This hurts a lot worse than contractions.)
After that, I started dialating. After a couple more hours, they let me have an epidural.
10 hours after they broke my water, I started pushing. My daughter wouldn't come down into the birth canel, so after 2 hours
of pushing. My doctor decided a emergency c section was the best idea.
They called the guy that put my epidual in back and he gave me a lot more stuff in that. Then, they wheeled me into OR. (My husband got to be in there, but he had to wear a mask and gown and hair and shoe coveriings and gloves. He got to sit by my head.)
I was awake (but sort of woozy and dizzy). I got to see my daughter when they lifted her out, but since there were some complications, the doctor put me under completely, after I saw her.
