A rivet is a metal fastener - like the ones on blue jeans. Golden probably just refers to the colour.

It is the imaginary commemorative rivet in shipbuilding. Every ship has one and the old salts sometimes make the rookies look for it. This is a hazing/initiation rite, since the rivet does not actually exist.

Well, three of the answers are right - it's a naval term referring to a penis which has been where it's not actually designed to go! - and what a "Golden Spike" used as a commemorative bolt on an American railway has got to do with this is anybody's guess, but it certainly isn't the right answer ! ! !

When they built the Transcontinental Railway across the USA, they started from both sides. They met in the middle in 1869 and had a ceremony which involved hammering in the last spike (to hold rails to sleepers) and it was made of a golden coloured metal (not gold!) and was 'the golden spike.'

There is probably one in one of the bridges crossing the Thames. There is one on the Forth (rail) Bridge up here in Scotland and only a select few know of it's location.
