He was a comic strip cartoonist dealing with satirical topics, and he was best known for his wacky "contraption" designs. These usually involved elaborate ways of moving a marble or other object from end to the other via means of twirling tracks, pins, weight, pulleys, etc. The T.V. show MYTHBUSTERS recently did a stunt that involved one of Goldberg's designs, and it actually worked (after some trial and error). There is more to Goldber than this, and the meaning behind his elaborate designs inolved statements about society. I am going off memory, but it is best to look up specific info about him via the web or, even better, if you can find a Biographical book at your library.

Famous cartoonist/newspaper artist, used to doodle fancy/complicated inventions to perform simple tasks. His name is now and adjective to describe overly complex and intricate designs.
If you watch MythBusters, they had aholiday episode last week that featured a Rube Goldberg device as the main project of the episode.

He was a cartoonist sometime around I think it was the early 20th century. Judging from his name I'd say he was likely jewish. He is most famous for having Rube Goldberg devices named after him.
