I have stopped using Depo for a while about 10 months since my last relationship broke down. I still have no periods and I am due for a smear test next week so I am going to speak with my doctor however I hate condoms and I have been with my new boyfriend 3 months and want to know if I can take another contraception instead or do i have to wait until my periods return how long will this be? The doctor/nurse seem a bit clueless about Depo Provera so i thought there must be other girls who may know. I do not want to go back to using Depo Provera again

usually, when you stop using any kind of BC for a period of time, you have to wait until your period to start a new kind. The reason for this is so the hormones in the bc correspond correctly with your body's cycle, so thats why they have you start a new BC on the first day of your period. Depo is different tho, and does different things to your body (i was on it for only 6 months and HATED it, it made me psycho and made my breasts completely disentegrate). Who knows how long it will be before you get a period.
So its been 10 months since you had a period? It seems to me that you could probably start using anotther bc now, but just be aware that it might not be totally effective (use a backup method, such as spermicide or condoms even tho they suck) for the first few weeks while your body transitions to the new BC. I don;t see any other option, so ask your doc if this is ok.
Also, try Nuva Ring for your new bc. I have been on it for a year, and i love it so much. Its just once a month, you take it out for a week, have your period, and put a new one in for 3 weeks, repeat. I havent had any negative side effects. Anyways, good luck to you!

I used Depo for a month. I gained a lot of weight (water retention), and eventually the weight fell off a bit. I tried almost every birth control method:
Othro Tri Cyclen Lo birthcontrol pills and I stopped that due to the fact that as my life got busier and my hours vary I could not remember to take the pill @ the same time. Plus every weekend I was commuting to stay w/ my boyfriends family and I forgot to take the pack w/ me. Oh and one time I went on vacation and lost the pack.
I tried Depo which I described earlier and stopped that for the reasons I explained. I enjoyed it because I did not have to remember the pill everyday; however I did not enjoy gaining weight and having to buy clothes.
I aslo tried the ring, but for me it made sex uncomfortable and I could feel it @ times (not all the time). When I did take it out for the most part I put it in within the three hour time limited allowed, but a few times I forgot and I had to use a back up method.
The last one I tried was The IUD. I use this since I'm in a long-term relationship that's really committed and I enjoy it. The first few months until a year my body is adjusting. I have not had weight gain; but I do work out. The insertion was very very painful and the three months it took my body to get use to it was really awkward. THey recommend it for wome that are married with children or women in long term relationships that are an adult. For the purpose to 1. Long term relationships to avoid bacteria traveling up into your uterus from your vagina which may cause infection to the uterus. 2. Women with chldren have less of a chance for getting the IUD expelled from their uterus as well as less pain during insertion. However this method is good up to 5 yeras
The one method I did not use was the patch. I heard various reports about it and the fact that there was a chance of gaining weight.

There is another new method that is not well know since it just got approved by the FDA for use in the US. It's on the market for use in other countries. This method is good up to 3 years.

You can go from one birth control to another when ever you want. You don't have to wait for you period, in fact starting another birth control, like the pill will bring your period back. I went from the depo straight to the pill but after a week I figured out real fast that the pill wasn't for me, so now I've been on nothing for the past two months, I still haven't gotten my period. But I'm considering trying Nuva Ring when I go back for my next Pap. Good luck.

Don't have the jab again! That stuff messed me up proper! I used the pill after coming off my Depo jab, although i used the mini pill, not the combined one. Although, I would suggest using condoms still for a while. the relationship is still relatively new, so unless you get a test done beforehand, I'd wait a little just to be sure!

i've been on the depo for over five years now, i came off for a short time last year, my periods returned to normal straight away, the nurse was shocked at this she said it can take along time get to normal again, how long i don't no think it varies from person to person, this isn't hundred per cent but think you have to wait till you body becomes normal again before starting a different form of contraception. I know to go on the depo again you will have to wait for a period

When I stopped getting Depo I went straight on the pill, I got my periods back after the 2nd month of being back on the pill.
I also have lost weight (27lbs). So just speak with the doc and ask for the pill if thats what you want.

I'm a strong believer of women being aware of their cycles and using the natural way of contraception. Many years ago I was on the pill and it caused all sorts of problems.
My husband and I used the natural method for 8 years and it worked wonderfully well for us. We used condoms at the beginning of our relationship but eventually stopped. When I'm at risk of being pregnant...around the ovulation time (half way through the cycle), then my husband wouldn't ejaculate inside. All this also made lovemaking a lot more fun and adventurous. Check your options!
