Yes, It CAN speed up your downloads based on several factors. How much bandwidth do YOU have? Does the site you are downloading from have MORE bandwidth available than you can use anyway? Under these circumstances, it wont help you very much. The REAL world scenario though is that Most servers LIMIT the bandwidth to one single user to be effecient for everybody that wants to use the site. This is where downloading the file in many pieces at the same time and reassembling them in the correct sequence on the user end can help with speed. Basically, a download manager that works this way is circumventing the limitations that the operator of the website has placed on each individual user. Im pretty sure they dont like that very much because you get more bandwidth for YOUR download at the detriment of overall site effeciency.

some download managers split your file into multiple sections and create simultanious downloads of whatever your downloading. Yes it CAN speed up your download but however i have not seen much of an increase.
