HUH? The baby has been born? It's not amniotic fluid then. The amniotic fluid is when the baby is still inside the mother, inside the bag of waters. The water is amniotic fluid.

Did you mean to ask if they are running an IV fluid? That would make more sense, because if the baby is not eating, they will be fearful of dehydration.

I assume that the baby was just born. It's possible that they are essentially pumping the baby's stomach to remove the amniotic fluid that the baby drank while still in the womb. This might be because the baby is refusing the breast or bottle, and the assumption is that the baby isn't eating because it isn't hungry...and the baby isn't hungry because it's stomach isn't empty...so, maybe they're thinking empty it.

With my newborn, after the water was broken he experienced a period of stress that wasn't helped by giving me oxygen or other less invasive options. The doctor decided to fill up the womb with fluid to help what was causing the stress. When my baby came out he seemed fine, but 40 minutes later when I was nursing him he turned blue...They think he was choking on fluid he had swallowed during labor/birth. They whisked him away and put a tube down to his stomach to remove any fluid that was left in there. He also didn't seem hungry for that first day. The nurses told me that it's normal for newborns to enter a sleepy, not hungry phase during the first 24 hours, but if the baby didn't start eating well after the 24 hour mark that would be a problem. So the time after the 24 hour mark was a frantic string of attempts to make the baby eat. Once we had things on track for enough hours we were finally allowed to go home. They're serious about making sure the baby will thrive before it goes home.

Maybe the baby swallowed a lot of amniotic fluid while she was still in the womb? Now she may feel full, therefore she won't eat.

I don't really know.. I'm just guessing here.

Amniotic fluid is what the baby is floating in while in the uterus. If the baby is born, there is no fluid.
