So my engine light came on about a month ago, and my mechanic told me the code was for a "very small emissions leak." He couldn't find it anywhere and just reset the code.

A week later the light came back on. He took another look and still couldn't find it. So he replaced the gas cap and said, you know, let's see what happens.

A month went by. Then the light came back. My mechanic just told me over the phone that I should ignore it and keep driving, because the light doesn't indicate anything serious. But boy, it's annoying as hell to see that light. It makes me nervous. Does anyone have any suggestions here? I'd greatly appreciate any help in diagnosing this ridiculous problem. Cheers!

By the way, I'm told the code is 456. Does anyone know what that means?

i mechanic for a living and own a repair shop, you need to take it to any auto zone, and see if they can scan it and see what the code is,,if its giving a code there is a problem with it somewhere it may just be a minor one,,but it needs to be found,,if auto zone cannot find it ,your dealer may have to scan it ,they have the big machine that will connect directly to Chrysler's main engineering service department,,and they can find it ,but there expensive on this,,i think auto zone can find it though,,good luck i hope this help,s.

That is very irresponsible for a mechanic to say dont worry about it. Your light came on for a reason. Goto your local auto store and get the codes read. A code 456 is...A small leak has been detected in the evaporative system!

Go here for Chrysler codes......

I would tend to think it might be time to let the Chrysler dealership take a look if anyone can find the problem it should be them, also ignoring the light is not a good idea in that if it is already lit due to some minor problem it won't be able to light and warn you of a major one!

visit a reputable shop, my personal thought is this mechanic doesn't know what he's doing and just doesn't want to deal with it.... my personal experience with this type of small emissions code (sometimes called a evap code by mechanics) was that the clamps for the fuel fill hose (looks like a radiator hose) may have worked loose or there is a air leak in that fill hose... that fixed my problem completely...

You replaced the solenoid but was that the problem ? Did you check the EGR valve ? Could be a bad valve or possibly carbon builup in the manifold beneath the EGR pintle. Proper diagnostics is the only way to find out what's really causing the problem and that includes scanning the egr circuit to see whats at fault and when. Diagnosing an egr problem isn't that difficult for a well trrained tech, so take it to a tech you trust and let him do his job.

Might be able to help if I knew what the code was.
Autozone will read the code for free and give you a list of possible problems.
