New research shows that it takes a woman's body up to 18 months to fully recover from the trauma of pregnancy and childbirth. Most women feel that they are back to themselves within a year. I am 4 months postpartum from my second child and I am still experiencing strange bleeding/spotting, hair loss...weird stuff.

My oldest is 27 years old, and I would say it's not "out of my system" YET. Still waiting.
Seriously, the hormonal changes of pregnancy resolve to their pre-pregnant levels within 4 to 6 weeks. Changes in your body, however, take longer to resolve. For example, many women continue to have some postpartum hair loss for several months.
If you are breastfeeding, prolactin will be elevated, and can stay slightly elevated for a few months after you stop nursing. Sometimes longer, especially if there is any stimulation to your nipples. Prolactin can sometimes have some effects -- breast tenderness, a little facial hair (not a lot) and maybe even some acne.
And, if you are using a hormonal method of birth control (pills, shot, patch, ring) there can be some side effects from that also.
Congratulations on your baby!

When you have children your hips are pushed out to make room for the new baby to develop. This will not return to the girlish shape you had before but if you exercise and keep the muscles toned you will look more like a woman with a great curve to your body. It is hard to explain but if you place your chest to the ground and butt in the air and pull the muscle in your stomach up it will align the uterus and help to pull it back into position, otherwise it just sits at the base of the belly. Sit ups, crunches, even swinging at the park help the stomach muscles. Enjoy your new baby and realiize you're a woman now and your body has been through a lot. Congrats, enjoy your little one.

Shes right. It takes about a year for your body to go back to normal but your hormones will never be the same. I catch everything my two year old daughter catches, and I think 'mommy' hormones are in your body forever!

My baby is 6 months old....I was told it can take a year or more by my OB/GYN...she told me to wait until my baby is 2 to have another child..it gives the uterus time to shrink back down to normal size
