I live in an apartment complex and my 9 mth old son just started screaming for the fun of it. I am not sure whether I should try and get him to be a little quieter (or is there really any point since he is so young) or just let him belt out his new vocal abilities! Do you think other tenants would complain? He goes to bed at 7 pm and gets up at 7 am so he only yells during the day.

I believe that comes under the heading "LOVING THE SOUND OF ONE'S OWN VOICE and it is perfectly normal.

most babies go through a screaming phase, and 9 months is just about the right time. personally, i think it is pretty funny. your son has just found a new way to use his voice and get attention! i don't know how much you can do to stop your son from screaming, other than by distraction and that is defintely not going to work all the time. you could also not pay attention when he does it, and he will learn that he won't get a reaction. that will take the fun out of it a little faster. i think you just have to hope the walls are sound-proof enough, and wait it out!

Hi, I would make sure that there is no under-lying health problem,if none,he may be trying to get your attention since he only screams during his awake time, spend some quality time,go outside,do a little one on one every day,see if this helps. He keeps on,make sure that he is safe and put him a few safe things to play with and occupy yourself with something and ignore his screaming, you might also think about the noise factor, to loud t.v. or radio?Maybe his Dr. might have some hints. Most of all don't be angry or upset with your son, this too shall pass and you will laugh about it many years from now, enjoy the adventure and good luck, hope there was some help here

Babies love to communicate and once they realize they can make loud noises they try it out for awhile for fun! I remember my daughter doing that and it didn't last for long. Later, when your son is older, you can talk about inside and outside voices. As you wisely suspected, he is too young to understand being quiet now. I think other tenants will understand. It is not like you are purposely being inconsiderate.
This won't help with the screaming, but check out "Baby Signs" a type of baby sign language which you can start teaching your son as another outlet for his personal expression. Have fun!

Congradulations! Your son just found his voice. All babies do this, because they can. Try distracting your son with toys or blowing into his face for the shock of it. If its only during daytime hours I wouldn't worry about it too much. He is a baby after all. If anyone says aything to you just laugh it off..."Oh, ya, you know my boy...he loves to talk!" Make it more of a happy, silly thing rather then embarrassment. It will make you feel better and maybe your neighbors will let it go a bit easier.

My 9 month old does the same. She thinks its fun. Actually, so do I. Sometimes we just scream back and forth and laugh about it. I suppose I shouldn't encourage the screaming, but it's fun to interact with her like that. Screw the neighbors - she is only a baby once.

Stop beating him. Just kidding. It could be that he's testing his voice. I couldn't imagine a child being so loud that neighbors would complain, but if that's the case then just talk to him. Teach him that talking is the way to communicate. Try to teach him some new words when he starts doing that. Who knows, he may be the next Luciano Pavarotti.

My 7-month old just began to do that as well... And since his schedule is 7am to 7pm I don't think the tenants should have a problem with it...

I say let him be...

Ignore it. Totally. If he gets attention for screaming when you know for sure it's not that he needs something and is only doing it for fun, that reinforces that screaming gets him attention. He won't keep it up for long if it doesn't get him any results.

He is just experimenting with his vocals. Your neighbors will be able to distinguish between fun and hurting voices. Talk to them ahead of time. They would appareciate that.
