A faint smell when loading the stove is common. Smell all the time is not. Somewhere there is a downdraft, resulting in the smell coming into the house. Call a chimney sweep to clean the flue. Consult another specialist to see if the flue and dampers are working properly. Good luck.

If it is a wood burning stove, take a wooden stick(when the stove is cold)and tap litely on your pipe. Then look inside the stove and see if you have a lot of soot fall back into the stove----if so, just change your pipe and damper----all the way out of the house. If pine was burned in the stove the soot accumulate quickly. The damper is not letting all the smoke out.Does it happen when you have the vents open completely?I'd just change it all out for safety sake...

You must have air making up into the home. Slightly crack open 1 or 2 windows in the home. This will allow the natural draft need for the gases to draft up the flue vent.

It sounds as if the flue is not opening completely; its either clogged with soot, creosote, or rusted. Better have it checked. All the exhaust should be vented to the outside. If you smell smoke, there's carbon monoxide present also.

that chimney needs to be cleaned! the past tenets may have burned mostly soft wood [like pine ]it burns easily enough but it is a sappy wood .that is why u don't want to burn just softwood .you should burn 60% hardwood [oak hickory etc] and 40% soft .the soft helps the fire start and the hard burns hotter longer.also u should burn seasoned wood [year old ]

Have you had you chimney cleaned yet? It should not smell like that if you are burning dry seasoned wood and if your chimney has been cleaned.
For safety reasons you shouldn't use it until it is cleaned and remember to only use dry seasoned wood.
