I'm planning to put my baby (when it arrives) in washable nappies. All the waterproof outer pants I've seen are lined with polyurethane.

Is this a safe substance? Does anyone know whether it's toxic? As well as environmental and cost reasons, I'm not keen to envelope my tot's genitals in all the nasty chemicals that go into disposable nappies, but would like to feel sure that polyurethane is okay.

Some of the covers I use are called PUL, that may be the same-it's still way more breathable than nasty disposables because the cloth next to the skin helps it breathe. I really like fleece covers, those are cheap and really breathe well. I would love to have wool-but those are expensive. I'll list some directories so you can see how many options there are for you, I'm in the united states though :)

I've used the terry towel squares the washable plastic pants for 7months. & my baby has never had a nappy rash or any irritation. Although I would reconmend using a normal nappy for bedtime & when you go out because they need to be change very often!!!

As an aside, nowadays nearly all electric guitars/basses are finished with a thick coat of polyurethane to protect the wood against the rigours of rock and roll. No toxicity reported to date.

If it wasnt safe you wouldnt be able to buy them, especially for babies. Think your over reacting, he will be subjected to a dam sight more when he starts breathin in the poluted air, so I wouldnt worry about the nappies or waterproof pants.

It is possible that your son may have some kind of skin irritation that makes him uncomfortable when anything is covering him or the places where he is staying, his bedroom or his play area might be too hot for him to keep these things on and he may be more comfortable without them.

The polyurethane nappy pants don't breathe, therefore, they will get a rash all the time.

Most cloth diapering moms I know use wool or flannel covers. Mind you flannel is a synthetic too.

The more natural moms use wool covers and cotton or hemp diapers.
