I don't think there is any single answer to this question. What is "best" is what is the university which will provide you with the best overall college education and experience. College is about so much more than just the classes. The cultural opportunities, the people that you will meet, and the experiences that you will have are all vital parts of your education. These are all things to consider when choosing a university. For most people, expense plays a major role also. I went to Purdue University and Indiana University because they were both great schools in my home state of Indiana. I was accepted at schools that may have been better but were much more expensive. Your major also plays an important role in what school will be best for you. There are excellent engineering and computer science schools which do not generally rank among the top schools worldwide. The schools that are generally thought of as the best schools in the world, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, etc are traditional liberal arts schools. Those that attend are generally expected to get a graduate degree in a particular discipline.

The gap between Harvard and most other schools is usually underestimated. Harvard is by far the wealthiest ($10 billion higher endowment than the next closest, Yale), most prestigious, and most selective university in the world. Those are usually the things people use to rank universities. Having Harvard on your transcript is usually enough to get you whatever job you desire.

Oxford University in the UK comes to mind. Just as an all-round prestigious school with a global reputation. I'm an American but I think I'll have to give credit to the British on this one.

Overall, including academics, location, etc. Just plain overall well rounded schools, I'd say Oxford or Harvard.

in case you want to study geology, then the final one to bypass to is the single that is maximum elementary so you might attend. it somewhat is the student who makes the version, no longer the college. i do no longer think of acclaimed universities unavoidably mirror the coaching skills of the teachers, as their usual job is analyze.
