My boyfriend has Crohns and I guess there is this treatment that helps it to slow down by using these parasite worms. Please dont get me wrong - I want him to be well, but I dont understand this: I asked him to explain, and he is not helping me to get this. He says it is experimental. Can this make him more sick? My friend told me to check up and make sure it cant make me sick either.....Any advice????

It may be that the parasite worms consume the stuff that causes the colitis. Crohn's is an inflammation of the bowel that results in ulcers. I can see it's possible that the worms may provide some cleaning action that we out here in the world don't know about.

Sometimes people can't see the logic behind some unorthodox treatments - for instance, maggots are used to consume dead tissue in some wounds, actually cleaning the wound rather than than harming the person.

If you do a search, "treating Crohn's Disease with worms" you'll come up with lots of information.

I see that people are apparently eating the worms. (I'd have to live with my disease, I think....).

What you need to ask is if the worms remain alive, and if being treated with them means essentially being infested with them; because a person who is infested with worms can "share" them. In general, worms don't just stay inside someone's intestine. They come out and lay eggs, which could be picked up by someone if the person isn't super-careful about handwashing.

To the best of my understanding, a worm infestation can be self-limiting; but a person can keep an infestation going by not being super-conscientious about handwashing and hygiene.

I have to say if it were someone I knew I'd rather stay at more than arm's length away from them, their bathroom, their bed clothes, or their food preparation - but that is my uneducated opinion.
