I have a 140 Johnson and it stalls at high speed and sets the temperature buzzer going.I wonder if the water works could be fowled up or partial blockage. i am cofused as to what the tell tale is telling me and if it is showing me that the water is actually passing over the upper pistons as well, keeping them cool, or just that the impeller is working, but not actually circulating throughout the motor.Another heating or stalling problem may come from the oil mixture and if it is correct....I have been going close to 80 to 100 to 1. I seem to remember some thing like 40 to 1, but that seems a lot. The confusing part is that the 2 hp Evinrude that i have runs on 100:1 but I admit ,has the normal spark plug .When i set the throttle on the 140 at 3/4 speed I have no apparent problem. As aa seperate query ,I recently had the heads removed on the 140 and would like to know the pressure that the head bolts should be tightened to after the run in time. Thanks for your participation , Ed.

50 to 1 on the oil/fuel...NO on the ethanol/methanol...you either need an impeller or to check the thermo-stats and poppet valves...the torque on the heads is 18-20#. hope that helps.

That old 40 will run on less oil mix cut back or add a little more gas to the mix . Change the plugs if the you can go up 1 heat range You went over 50 to 1 like if you had 1 gal left in the tank an put 50 to 1 an added 5 gal for 6 your at 40 something oil mix won't run with that an if you do this a couple of time your really off on the mix???I run all mine for yrs on 100 to1 can't stand all the smoke had no problems an plugs last for ever. All the newer eng are 100 to1. Your call ??

I cant tell you the fuel mixture but where I work we are actually the copyrighted distributors of Johnson/Evinrude manuals from anything that is older than a 1996! You would have to purchase the owners manual and that will give you everything from winterization, gas, oil, adjustment, installation, operators maintenance, and specs! Its called the Kencook company! Visit... http://www.kencook.com! I cant give you the ratio's over the phone you will have to order a manual! Otherwise call your closest Johnson/Evinrude Dealer and ask to speak with a tech!

PS... If you call we will need the model number off of the engine! Must have that! Thanks!

sounds like the impeller and pump are working (TELL TALE WORKS), try thermostat replacement, water should increase in tell tale as rpm's increase (slightly), 50 to 1 is your fuel oil ratio 3.0 oz of oil per gallon of gas, not sure on the head bolts but, be careful, do not over torque (Aluminum), try here www.theoutboardwizard.com or www.whalercentral.com, either one will help you.

What I did was use google to find a website about Johson. Then I found something called iboats Boating Forum. I joined this and was then allowed into the forum. These guys answering will tell you everything you want to know. Also you can try this website: galewarnings. If you go to iboats and join up you will get all the info you can use.
