Don’t worry about it if the baby can suck a bottle or on a nipple. If your baby can’t do neither of these then you should see a doctor. You say that he needs it only when sleepy or in a car seat, if that is not for too long hold it for him. But I would guess that he just does not want it that much. My baby sucks on a pacifier occasionally, sometimes she does not want it and spits it our after a few sucks or does not even take it in at all. Do not force it in, wait for a while or try to teach your baby to suck his thumb. What you might also do if you know that your baby needs the pacifier is hold it in his mouth for a few minutes until you see a steady rhythm then let go, and praise him for sucking. If he spits it out and wants it back repeat, eventually he will get the idea. Oh, also it takes a baby few days to get adjusted to a new pacifier so don’t switch them as soon as you see that he is spitting it out. You might not give him enough time to get used to sucking on it.
Good luck

Well here is my word of advice on a Pacifier. I have two daughters and never ever allowed them to have one. Not only can it cause them to have bad teeth later down the road but a pacifier is exactly what it says it is. Its a tool to Pacify the baby, to comfort it. Take the Pacifier away and you be the tool that comforts your baby. Those are one of the worst things I truly feel ever to give a baby.
But to answer your question 3 months isn't to young for a pacifier its just that your baby still lacks the ability to hold on to it for a period of time or gets tired of trying. Don't forget their hand and eye coordination isn't developed yet so its hard for them to do anything at all.
Hope this helped you out.
And about thumb sucking which I read above too, Please dont take offence to it but I have seen young babies grow up to suck their thumbs at over 6 years old. Pull that thumb out of the mouth, Not only can that ruin their teeth which I have seen first hand it can also deform the thumb and I have seen that first hand aswell. Its a Proven FACT not my Oppinion and please dont take offence to my comments I mean no harm by it.
Heres a few links to help you out

Whoa!! thank you for making me no longer experience so undesirable that I had a pair weeks of a screaming infant that wasn't pleased with something! right this is what i understand from our adventure with our 5 week previous. We tried categories of formula and categories of gasoline drops, Mylicon blanketed and not something worked. If no longer something it made it worse with the aid of fact she started getting constipated. I surely have been to 2 distinctive pediatricians with the aid of fact i grew to become into aggravated that the 1st swore she had gasoline while she grew to become into truly having a no longer common typing going poo. the 2nd pediatrician distinctly lots pronounced a similar element that it grew to become into colic even however at that factor she hadn't had a BM in 2 days. finally a mind-blowing pal reported Enfamil Nutramigen (this is a little greater costly than most of the different stuff...yet liquid gold in my domicile!!!). Her BMs grew to grow to be greater nicely-known, she grew to grow to be way much less fussy or maybe has sessions of time the place she is conscious and alert and surely satisfied and playful. i do no longer understand if this could help or in case you're having a similar issues...yet I do experience for you and desire you success on a mind-blowing few hours of sleep very quickly!!!!

Maybe you son (like both of mine) won't take a paci. Some babies don't,and it's perfectly fine and normal, nothing wrong with him, no need to get him checked out.
Drop the paci. He doesn't want it, look at it this way, you won't have to take it away when he's older! (It's quite a battle!)
AND--Breastfed babies have to suck harder than bottlefed babies! That's why you can't give a breatfed baby a bottle too young--they will get lazy and not suck at the breast! They also use their tongue differntly to get milk out of the breast and bottle. It's called nipple confission. People should not speak of things they do not understand!

Is he a breast fed baby or a bottle fed baby? Breast fed babies don't have to such as much as a bottle fed baby. Stick with the type that you have for a bottle if you are using one. They have the playtex ortho that are the best. Wait until he is so upset then give it to him. Maybe he doesn't need it at all and that is OK.

At 3 months your son should be able to hold the pacifier in his mouth. Get him checked out.

every baby is different. our son will hold a pcaifier in his mouth occasionally...he is almost 4 months. sometimes he'll keep it in his mouth for a bit and then he'll spit it out.
he's not a big pacifier fan, though.
i would say that maybe he just doesn't want it and spits it out, or else, he just hasn't gotten the hang of keeping it in his mouth.
i'm kind of glad that my little guy is a thumbsucker. we'll never have issues of him losing that!!!
take care.

ok hes old enought to hold it in my held his in pretty much at a week old.
sounds like he doent really want it most babys dont want one.
sounds like hes wanting the bottle and its like hey theres nothing in here and he lets go.
if he not depended on it i say let it go bye bye while you can .
trust me they are troubleeeeee.once they want it its hell letting it go.
my son had one thru birth we lost the bottle at 1 yr old no trouble at all lost the diapers at 2 no trouble there gone and finally at 4 we lost the pacifier trust me we tried and tried it was something he just couldnt let go of..he had teeth problems from it.He is now turning 6 and still crys if he sees one in the store .its not worth it trust me.
my sisters kids were the same with it.my sister told my neice they stoped selling them when she finally took it at 5 my neice for a year went in the stores asking the workers if they sold pessie. her kids had teeth trouble from them also.
its easy to say your child wont have it that long(I did say it) but its a habit they form like cigeretts and drugs they cant let it go.and when they cry for hours non-stop they wont sleep or eat till they get that thing and it will be a monkey on their back . my neice is 10 now and will tell you she finds her self tempted to buy a pacifier and hide it from her mom.
but if you want him to have one it may be the brand or wrong age try the nukes they like them better.

there is a BIG difference between "won't" and "can't"...
if he actually CAN'T hold it in, bring him to your pediatrician and have him checked out. breastfed or bottle fed - doesn't matter... all babies should have the ability to keep the paci in.
if he doesn't WANT the paci, i'm w/ Noggin Mama and joey: just don't worry about it. consider yourself one of the lucky ones.
