My nephew turned 10 months old on Dec. 20th. He doesn't crawl, reach for things, and can't even hold his own bottle. He doesn't say any words yet, either. He doesn't reach for toys or food or anything, just holds his arms up about half way and constantly moves his hands in an up and down motion. If you put him on his tummy to get him to try to crawl, his arms and legs go straight out and he screams. He just sits there with his mouth hanging open and drools. He can barely sit up on his own, too. I want to know what your babies are doing at this age. I really think something is wrong with him and I'm worried.

Also, any ideas on what could be wrong? I know that all babies are different, but I really am afraid something is seriously wrong with him.

He was not premature. His parents know something is wrong but are in denial. They say he is "lazy", but considering how babies that age are usually into everything, I don't think that's logical. I have a daughter and 5 nieces so I know he is lagging developmentally.

Was he premature? If so premmies don't reach milestones for their actual age, but the age they would have been if they were full term.
Crawling is NOT a developmental milestone, some babies never crawl--so this is no cause for concern.
He's in the normal range for 1st words.
Is his mom worried? She should talk to his ped.

Has the parents took him to the Pediatrician? Things like this are not normal, the child should at least be siting up on his own at this point even holding a bottle and playing with toys. I would have already taken him to see the Pediatrician at this point if i were worried something could be wrong. The doctors always want to know these things. When i would take my son they would give me a paper to fill out about his development and ask a ton of questions to make sure he's developing like he should. I would have him checked out just in case.

It sounds like you have a reason to be worried. Babies develop at different rates, but your nephew should be doing some of the things you are saying he can't. What do his parents say? Does he go in in for his regular well-baby check-ups? A pediatrician should have noticed these things by now. This baby needs early intervention services, pediatricians usually know where you can find them. Every state is required to provide these services for their communities, and it's usually low-cost or free. Look in the yellow pages for something like, Early Development Intervention Services, or Child Find, or call a pediatrician. You sound like a good aunt, I hope the parents of your nephew listen to you and get him help. The sooner he can start services, the quicker he'll catch up. Good Luck.

Well by 10 months my daughter was crawling pulling herself up to stand and even climbing up stairs..she also held the bottle...but you know..your nephew not doing those things could indicate a serious problem or it could just mean the parents arent working with him enough...but the first thing that popped in to my head when i read your question was...doesnt he got to well child visits for shots??? and if so, why hasnt anyone said anything to the doc....the docs ask questions like is he crawling so on and so forth.....he should probably be checked just to be on the safe side

My son was a premie. At ten months, he was crawling and pulling himself up to a standing position. He had a few teeth. He was using a sippy cup and feeding himself finger foods.
He was able to say a few words..."Momma, Daddy, and fries"
He could sit and play with toys very well.
My daughter is 1, now. At 10 months, she was doing pretty
much the same things as her brother.
My neice has Down's Syndrome. She acted like you describe your
nephew at that age.
I'd advise you to advise the parents to have him tested for developmental disorders.

The reference to repetative motions makes me wonder about autisim. I don't think it usually shows up that young, but it would explain everything.
My babies were pretty advanced physically, the two youngest were both walking and climbing stairs by 10 months, but their Dr did say that was early. So they're not a good comparison for you.
You said he doesn't say words, but does he babble? Is he making any attempts to communicate? Even pointing at things? if not that's a pointer to Austisim too. What does his Doctor have to say?

I think the important thing is, is he developing new skills? Is he sitting better than he was a month ago, babbling a greater range of sounds etc? If he is, then I would not worry, he will learn to crawl and talk soon enough. If it seems that his development has stopped, then he needs to be examined by a pedritician.

Your nephew should at least be reaching for things. However, until the parents want to do something about it there isn't much you can do. Unless you think that the medical neglect warrants a call to Children's Services.
However, if you know they take him to the doctor regularly I would just assume they do not want to share the details with you. A doctor wouldn't miss checking for milestones.

Are the parents spending enough time with the baby practicing and developing those muscles? They do things in their own time, but that does seem late. Does a DR know?

Babies develope at different rates. Does your sister take him to the pediatrician for his check ups? If you are concerned than let her know...ask her to take the baby to the pediatrician and have them check the baby out!!! Babies at 10 months do not usually talk or talk very little at this age.
