It will only get worse. There is still so much hate and discontent and no one will change that..

I don't think we'll see any change for a few months. But in the first quarter of next year, we should get new US troops deployed with a few new objectives--mostly, trying to calm this civil war by protecting the civilian populations under threat, something we haven't bothered much with yet. I suppose we'll eventually try to hand that job over to the Iraqi troops we're supposed to be training.
A lot will hang on the next US election. If the Republicans get the presidency, I think we'll see a long-term committment in Iraq. We'll probably have a struggle there for a good 5-10 years, but we'll also probably build up some incentives for Western companies to invest in Iraq so that when we finally "finish" this fight, we'll be removing our army but not our influence. The goal here would be to keep a strong but non-military presence in Iraq in an attempt to forge new kinds of US-Arab relationships in the Middle East and try to stop the anti-US sentiment over there from escalating even further.
If the Democrats get the presidency, we might get a troop reduction, but I can't imagine we'd get a pull-out right away. In that case, we'd still be there another three years at least. We'd probably have to go back eventually as well, since we've sown so much bad will in the Middle East at this point that we're likely to have some kind of retalliation come our way no matter how quickly we leave.
