Do you like the outdoors, or hiking...Do they.
I would suggest a hike at the WHITE TANK MOUNTAINS, Not too hot in Phx. this time of year, Lots of trails for all ages and abilities.
There is a hike called the ...Well let me think,...
Well you can ask for a map or get a map when you get there, entry may be like 3.50 to 5.00...
There is a VERY EASY trail which leads to old NATIVE PETROGLYPHS .
Maybe it's the WONDERLAND Trail, but I do not remember.
Still it will get you outdoors, no Rattle Snakes or Scorpions to worry about this time of year, and you can spend QUALITY TIME with your children. The cost is VERY LOW, and it is like 20 miles out of Peoria, I do not remember for sure, but I think you take OLIVE all the way to the park.I have not been in Phx. for five years.
The White Tanks were one of my favorite places to Hike.
Otherwise, if you have a little bit more money, which it sounds like you do not, Take them to Jerome, AZ.
At about 5,500 feet, it is I believe the HIGHEST City in the U.S. at least, west of the Rockies... Take the back way there, go out Grand Ave, Cut across towardlake pleasant to Wickenburg, then follow Hmm, you better get a map...I want to say Hwy. 88 or 808, but I am not sure.
You climb up a windy mountain road, and come into Jerome on the Back side right out of the mountains.
I do not know, I suppose there could actually be snow over there.
You could take ...what is it? I-15 out of Phoenix, at 70 MPH. you are to the TURN OFF for SEDONA in like an hour and a half, and then To Jerome in less than 45 minutes after that...
Just watch out for those small town Police. Even if you think you are not in a town, on the way to Jerome.
Jerome is an old MINING TOWN. If you happen top make it, Go see THE GOLD KING MINE.
Don King is the Owner.
The Gold King mine is an old Ghost town, complete with Dentist office, shoe shop, blacksmith, and Don King has SEVERAL VINTAGE Vehicles, most of which still run.
Jasper a friendly old Donkey likes to eat Carrot Treats right out of your hand.
There is an old style saw mill Which Don still operates, and produces several yard or board feet of lumber each year.
I found a HUGE 2 and 1/2 pound slab of BEAUTIFUL MALACHITE, up on some trails beyond the Gold King Mine...
Ah its a great place and you can check out the gift shops, full of all sorts of cool stuff, including gems and rocks of every kind.
If you are into that at all, Kids Love Rocks.
anyway...
Otherwise, there is a McDonalds or Burger King you can get em lunch and cut em loose.
Hope I helped.
From Jerome there is a SPECTACULAR View of the Sedona Valley.
Ofcourse it is a town FULL of the old MINING HISTORY...
Sedona is not too far from there and you should check it out...
Lake Pleasant is another good place to go for Desert Scenery and hikes.
Some good rocks to find around the lake on various Road Pull outs...
I just want to come Back to AZ. I miss it a lot.
I am a ROCKHOUND and there is soooo much MATERIAL in AZ. it is just like a big PLAYGROUND for a ROCKHOUND!!!
Camelback Mountain is a nice hike...
Go to the White Tanks, it may not even Cost anything this time of year, except GAS to get there.
Go see the Native Petroglyphs, that are probably 150 years old or more...
Like I said, FREE besides the cost of GAS.
Pack a lunch, and have a great time.
Douglas.

Phoenix.. where? Arizona? Castles and Coasters! 20 dollars for admission and dudee its fantastical. don't go looking at native American stuff, your kids will hate that, unless they are the intellectual type. well, you know what I mean.
