I love Roller Coast Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon, but ultimately the best tycoon game was the original tycoon game: Dino Park Tycoon. It was the one that started it all. I spent 6 years looking for it after discovering it in a computer class at school. I finally found it on Amazon.com. The other games are definitely more advanced with more to do, but something's got to be said for being the first, so my answer is definitely Dino Park Tycoon.

The one true original, Railroad Tycoon. True, it's an entirely different kind of game than what is now meant by a tycoon game, but that's a large part of it's appeal.

It used to be Railway Tycoon. Never managed to get my railway going in Japan ... All them mountains got the better of me.
