I just thought it must be...but are there any proofs of that yet? I mean if the idea behind the making of the JVM is actually "opensource", then shouldn't people start making their own virtual runtime environments and get it installed in other platforms?

What is your opinion?

where did you read Java was opensource? you can decompile .class files, but that doesn't make it opensource :P Java is a "free" language, as in you get sdk's for every major platform, for nothing in price. BUT, when you buy java products from sun, they come with more scalability, reliance, support for more processors, and optimization for more specific hardware. not to talk about the whole suite of Ide's and development tools. and all of this cost thousands and thousands of dollars. you think sun is just going to give you the code to this? no way.

Please note that Java 8 was just recently released. The JDK 1.8 is actually available for free for download, allowing you to study the source and contribute to the Java community!
