They are known by a few names, eg 'Choose Your Own Adventure' or 'gamebooks'. There are also horror-themed ones called 'Choose Your Own Nightmare'. They are common in bookshops, especially those which offer rental.

Lots of people have correctly identified the Choose Your Own Adventure series. However an alternative is the Fighting Fantasy books - these were popular at about the same time and had the same principle, but were much more interactive. They involved combat, picking up items, getting skill points etc. They've recently come back into print in the UK, you can find them in WHSmiths.

I used to read those too. They are called "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. If you do a search for them on Amazon or any online bookseller you can find some--in the US the very first result was a boxed set of 6 for $20. You can find them in the UK as well.
Used bookstores may have some, if you ask, and of course you can search used online bookstores too, such as Alibris.
Good luck!

They're quite hard to come by unfortunately now, but the title of the series was "Choose Your Own Adventure" and you can still find them in UK libraries across the country. Failing that and if you did just have to own them, I'd suggest eBay (http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.co.uk%2Fws%2F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=%22Choose+Your+Own+Adventure%22&category0=) or Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_/203-3039043-4339118?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Choose+Your+Own+Adventure). Also, if you fancied a laugh, www.somethingawful.com has a section called "Photoshop Friday" where readers are encouraged to submit created images on a certain topic (changes weekly), and a year or so ago, the topic was "Unsuitable Choose Your Own Adventure books that never were" or something to that effect - it had me rolling on the floor.

Whatever You Want by Rachel Timms and Laurence Hayes was okay. I got a little bored with it, but I still have it somewhere. I've put a link to its amazon UK page, or you can have my copy if I can find it!

I wish I could help you but I don't know... those were really cool books though. Maybe try Scholastic Books or something like that...? They may have published those books. Or do a search on Childrens books in Amazon.com
good luck!

Ask your local book shop. They will probably be either in the children's or Sci Fi section.
