A real diamond,if only a small one, would be better. But most important is how he treats you.I've had some beautiful real rings, that ended up at a pawn shop.Because he wasn't real!! Good Luck, and be careful!

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, but every time I see a billboard or a bus ad or whatever that's advertising cubic zirconium jewelry, I always wonder, "What kind of guy would think that would be a good idea?"
CZ stones are for fake party jewelry. They're fine for a 16-year-old headed to a winter formal, not for a lifetime commitment like marriage.
I used to be poor, so I know that money is an object for many people, but even when I had almost no income to speak of, I was still able to save enough to get my wife an engagement ring of more than a carat (not counting channel stones).
What I did was I went to a diamond wholesaler that buys stones direct from Israel. Keep in mind that not all stores that claim to be wholesale are, in fact, wholesale. Check out the shop itself. Look at the prices and compare them to the gem's color, clarity, and carat weight. Talk to the salespeople. If they are truly wholesale, you'll be able to tell by the difference in their approach.
At a wholesale store, you can get a better-quality diamond that's about 1/3 larger than the one you'd have bought at a retail store. And they come with certifications that inform you of the stone's color, inclusions, etc. The best ones will even check the stone right in front of you to prove it's the real deal.
Why am I telling you this? Because it sounds like your would-be fiance is underestimating what he can buy for you in an engagement ring. I think you should talk to him and tell him that if he really intends on marrying you, the two of you should get a stone that you can be as proud of 50 years from now as you can the day he gets down on his knees and proposes. A real diamond will appreciate in value, but a CZ is always going to be trash.
And please, don't think anything of going shopping for the ring with him. A lot of couples do this these days, including my wife and I. If you really want to be surprised, then you don't have to be there when he picks the ring out. Simply give him 2 or 3 ideas and let him make the final decision.
Choosing between a diamond and a CZ stone isn't about materialism, so don't feel greedy in asking for the real deal. A CZ stone is second-best, and you don't want to get a second-rate stone from a first-class husband.
Happy shopping, and more importantly, have a happy life together!

If you're okay with it then there shouldn't be a problem. I would think that if he has the money to get you something better than a $50 ring from Wal-Mart, that is going to turn your finger green in a few days. Than you should encourage him to do that.
Some people will actually be able to see that it is a fake ring and someone may even call you on it.
But, it's your ring and you know what you will appreciate.

You know whats funny about this...? I have a real Diamond ring and a CZ ring from QVC. When I don't feel like wearing my real one to somewhere like the casino when my hubby and I go out I put on my CZ. And the funny thing is I get more people saying oh how pretty than my real one. My real one is smaller it is only 1.75ct. My fake on is 2.50. So I dont think it matters as long as you love eachother and she says Yes!

Well all of us girls would love a diamond, but I think it's just the fact that people would see the ring and know you are engaged is why maybe he would buy a CZ. I personally wouldn't mind cuz being engaged is a wonderful thing, but if he can afford it, then maybe is is trying to be cheap and thats not right. So i guess it depends on how you feel about it.

Did you know that it was CZ when he asked and you said yes. Actually the real question is does it matter to you? Would your answer have been any different? If you love the guy it shouldn't matter what kind of ring he got you. At least he got you one.

Yes it would be ok it's the feeling that comes along with the ring. Every thing is not all about the vaule of material things,it's about the meaning of them.
