i would like to know how do you make a blog. I need to start from the beginning, and what there is for software or is there a good free site that i could visit to get started

Don't forget about livejournal.com and wordpress.com
First, what will you primarily be blogging about? That could go a long way in determining which to use.
As with the above, the two I gave you are free services. I personally like wordpress and livejournal because *you* own the content that you post. On that note:

The reason being is some blogging services reserve the right to take what you write, use it for their own purposes, and don't have to pay you or give you credit.
Also, with most of these sites you can browse other peoples blog, so you can get a taste of what layouts (the look and feel), features, and so forth are offered.
Personally my vote goes to Wordpress. I find it painfully easy to use, even for those new to blogging. And it's updated fairly regularly with new features, themes, and the like.
