I used Google Earth.
I went to the West Coast of Scotland and found an inlet, connecting the bay, in front of Dumbarton, to the sea.
(55 57 N 4 37 W)

From that point, I used the ruler to find the shortest distance from the inlet coast to the loch's coast: just a tiny bit more than 4 miles (6.5 km).

PS: I wonder if the water off Arrochar is still salty. If so, then the distance from the water North of Arrochar to the loch off Tarbet is only 2.5 km (1.5 mi).
