Give them a really akward faint smile and squint my eyes to see them better. And then feel like a heel when they get closer and I realize I have no clue they are.

If they are looking dead at you and are coming to see YOU, then you can wave and be like "Hey how ya doin'?" otherwise, wait till they approach you. You don't want to seem wierd or anything.
