I'd prefer American universities, but would consider any reputable universities based in Australia, the UK, or New Zealand.

So cool to see someone else interested in this field. There are so many awesome careers that this area will lead you. Anyway, I lived and worked in Japan for 2 years and I wasn't TESOL or TEFL certified. It's not really neccesary if you want to teach in Asia(Europe requires these certifications, but they pay far less). The European countries Poland,Hungary,Czech, etc. all pay a fraction of what you would make in Japan or Korea(the pay the most) or if you are a "male" don't forget the Emirates or Saudi Arabia. The Arab Gulf Nations pay some serious money. Some pay up to $60 per hour. The University of West Florida offers online courses for a M.Ed in Cummulative Education/ESOL Certification and Endorsement. It's an accredited school actually # 7 for Education. You will need to take the G.R.E. and if you are not a Florida resident apply for a waiver(so you don't have to pay the out-of-state non-resident tuition price). I'm actually a student in this program and not only will I be ESOL Certified, but I can teach any grade K-12, and it's a great doorway to a PHD,being that it's a Professional MA program. Here are some other tips that could be helpful:

1.To work in Asia(China,Korea,Japn, etc.) only a 4 year degree is required. If you are from Canadia, France, or New Zealand you don't need a degree at all to work in Japan, you can work for 1 year on a working holiday.

2.The Arab Gulf Countries pay the most. A friend of mine worked in Riyahd for 5 years and made nearly $400,000USD. He was given a Lexus as a gift, and had an all expense paid 2x per year to go home. Only a 4 year degree is needed. However "YOU MUST BE MALE", females are hired, but paid much less and it's difficult to adjust. DON'T BE INTIMIDATED OR JADED BY MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE ARAB STATES, IT'S 99% MEDIA HYPE. They have money beyond what you could begin to comprehend. My friend often gave private lessons and was paid in boxes of cash.

3. Japan 1st. then Korea pay the best in Asia, also the lifestyle and social scene is fun and fast paced. Super easy to adjust to life there and find new jobs, etc. In Japan you get a work permit for 1 year and the it renews for 3 years, allowing you to work where ever you like. NOTE: KOREANS ARE EXTREMELY RACIST(NOT ONLY AGAINST PEOPLE OF COLOR BUT PRETTY MUCH ANYONE THAT ISN'T KOREAN) IF YOU ARE A PERSON OF COLOR OR ASIAN, IF HIRED OUT OF DESPERATION YOU WILL BE QUICKLY FIRED AS SOON AS A "WHITE" INSTRUCTOR CAN BE FOUND. (no i'm not racist, love 'em all,but the truth it's always nice:( )

4.Becareful with "ONLINE" MA's and programs. Make sure they are accredited and that you will recieve a MA and NOT A CEERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION or YOUR DEGREE WON'T READ "ONLINE MA"(MANY OF THESE ONLINE PROGRAM'S DEGREES WILL PRINT WITH THAT DISTINCTION). Ii honestly is better to just go through a regular university and see what classes are offered via internet. Also those online programs just send you a bunch of material and you learn basically nothing.

5.If you teach abroad for at least a year, most American Universities will give you 6-9 MA credits toward your degree. Most MAs are 32-36 credits so that's 1/2 - 1 year of credit towards your degree and would save you at least $10,000USD. I was awarded 9 MA credits for working in Japan.

Anyway I apologize for being so long, but I wish someone would have given me this info 5 years ago, and I've seen many of my colleages make some huge mistakes. G'luck and don't hesitate to email me.

Are you already certified as a teacher? If so, you might want to consider Grand Canyon University's Master of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

"This program is designed for already certified teachers or administrators with an interest in teaching ESL students in the classroom or serving as a district ESL coordinator. The format and courses of the regionally accredited program are tailored to meet the needs of the adult learner, who is a certified teacher or administrator, and to maximize strengths that the working educator possesses. Courses are taught by experts in their respective fields who share knowledge and experience in areas of linguistics, second language acquisition, and curriculum development. Opportunities are provided to apply concepts, theories, and research throughout the program, but particularly in an unsupervised internship which guides students through observational and practice based experiences. Graduates of the program are prepared to become leaders in the ESL/TESOL initiatives districts must undertake in an ever increasing school climate of diversity."

Grand Canyon University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
